‘그만’의 어휘화와 다의 발달에 대한 일고찰

국문 초록

본고는 ‘그만큼’을 뜻하는 ‘그만’의 다의 발달 과정을 추적한 것이다. ‘그만’은 그 자체로이든 복합어의 어근으로이든 다양한 의미를 가지고 있다. ‘그만’은 ‘그만큼’이라는 투명한 의미로부터, ‘후행 사태의 중단’, ‘선행 사태의 중단 및 후행 사태로의 전환’, ‘후행 사태로의 전환’ 등 조금 덜 투명한 의미를 거쳐 ‘예기치 못한 상황임’을 나타내는 용법, ‘더할 나위 없음’을 나타내는 용법 등의 불투명한 용법에 이르기까지 상당히 다양한 의미 스펙트럼을 보여 준다. 역사 자료상으로는 ‘그만큼의 상태임’을 나타내는 형용사 ‘그만하다’가 등장하고, 이후 그 활용형 ‘그만’으로부터 관형사 ‘그만’이 발달한다. 그리고 ‘그만큼을 함’을 나타내는 동사 ‘그만하다’는 ‘그만 여’의 형태로 ‘중단하다’의 의미를 발달시키고, 이로부터 ‘그만’의 다양한 부사적 용법이 발달하게 된다. 한편 ‘그만’은 [소진 가능 주어 + 그만이다] 구문을 중심으로 ‘끝남’이나 ‘더할 나위 없음’의 의미를 발달시킨다.

영문 초록

This paper investigates the whole history of derivational senses of the complex root ku-man (← ku ‘that’ + man ‘equivalent to’) as it bifurcated in meaning as attested from 15th century texts. It has a wide range of senses by itself or as a radical of a complex verb: from a simple compositional sense ‘that degree/amount’, via rather fusional senses like ‘to stop an action denoted by the following verbal phrase’, ‘to stop an ongoing action and then move on to a new situation denoted by the following verbal phrase’, and ‘to change the current state into a new one denoted by the following verbal phrase’, then to the senses far from its original meaning, such as ‘suddenly’, ‘to be excellent’, ‘to be done and over with’ etc. Looking into historical data the verbal adjective kumanha-da meaning ‘to be in the state of that degree/amount’ appears early on, and its conjugation form, kumanha-n , develops toward a contemporary Korean adnominal kuman . Furthermore, the verb kumanha-da meaning ‘to do that much degree/amount’, while used as the conjugation form kumanha-ye , comes to have a sense ‘to stop,’ which gives rise to the multiple adverbial senses of kuman . Meanwhile, kuman also develops the two predicative senses ‘to be done and over with’ and ‘to be excellent’ based on the construction [consumable entity subject + kuman=i-da ].
