도덕 당위와 생명 당위 - 성명(性命)에서 생명(生命)으로

국문 초록

  인문주의자들은 인간의 주체성을 확립하는 과정에서 도덕 명령 앞에 서게 되었다. 도덕 당위란 자연스런 생명의 충동을 억누름으로써 자기를 통제하고, 그처럼 자기 수양을 통해 세상의 주인이 되려는 노력이다. 그러나 도덕 당위에 눌려 있는 개인의 생명 당위를 재발견함으로써 우리는 자연친화적이고 소유에서 존재로 돌아가는 길을 찾고자 한다. 도덕 당위인 성명(性命)으로부터 살아야 하는 당위인 생명(生命)으로 내려가는 일은 인문주의적 문명의 소유의 세계에서 존재 자체로 돌아감으로써 개인의 싱싱한 생명력을 회복할 뿐 아니라, 성명이 요구하는 타자와의 관계도 개선할 수 있으며, 무엇보다도 소비 위주의 삶에서 탈피해서 자본주의 문명의 파괴성으로부터 해방되는 길을 찾게 될 것이다.
  성리학은 성명을 중시여기면서 살고 살리는 의지(生意)를 도덕 당위의 처음과 끝에 둠으로써 자연친화적인 인문주의로 주목을 받을 만하다. 인간의 악을 심각하게 의식해서 형이상학을 만들어 초월적 원리로 희망을 찾으려고 한 성리학은 그 원리가 자연에 내재한 것으로 봄으로써, 생명 당위의 차원에서 도덕 당위를 완성하는 구도를 마련했다고 할 수 있다.

영문 초록

  Humanism, both in the Eastern and in the Western history of thought, was to build the subjectivity of human being in terms of leading life and not being led. Such project led to struggling with one"s natural instinct, in other words, winning against oneself. Transcendent God was turned into transcendental moral law inside the human mind and the self-transcendence has become the real task to accomplish. That"s what the great philosophers like Mencius and Kant show by emphasizing the moral decision all over the corporal tendency. Mencius stressed that human moral nature(性) is not born by nature(生).
  But there is another basic commandment, which we call the commandment of life. Living one has to live. Putting the unconscious life obligation to the conscious level, we mean to go down to the dimension of being in contrast to the well-being, not only the ordinary sense but also humanistic one. Neo-confucianism is very meaningful for our project. Will to live is in the beginning and at the end of morality there. Such a vision might reduce the properties and the consumptive products on the whole. But we think the ecological crisis of contemporary civilization based on the western capitalism left no choice but to break up with the western imagination of freedom according to the possession.
