국문 초록

이 글의 목적은 고대 중국의 제자백가사상을 이론적 자원으로 해서 현대인의 삶에 적용 가능한 다원론적이고 관계론적인 덕론과 수양론을 제시하는 것이다. 관계 론적이고 다원론적인 덕론이란 덕성이 단순히 개인의 신비로운 내면적 마음의 성질이 아니라, 타인이나 환경 과의 관계에서 성립하는 성향이고, 또한 단순히 윤리적인 것일 뿐만 아니라 지적, 영적, 육체적, 시민적 덕성을 포괄한다는 것이다. 이러한 관계론적이고 다원론적인 덕론이 가지는 수양론에의 함축은 덕성의 배양에 있어서 세 가지 점이 부각되는 것이다. 첫째, 지성의 역할이 강조되고, 둘째, 덕성은 절대적이고 객관적인 기준이 있는 것이 아니라, 상황에 따라 달라지는 상대주의적인 것이고, 셋째 덕성은 축적되어서 견고한 마음의 성질이 아니라 부단히 활동해야지 유지되는 것이라는 점이다. 이러한 덕론과 수양론은 기존의 이론과는 달리, 덕성의 주관성으로 말미암아 빚어지는 신비로움이나 절대성을 어느 정도 해소하는 효과가 있다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this article is to present the pluralistic and relational theory of virtue and self-cultivation applicable to contemporary world using the theoretical resources of ancient Chinese philosophers. The Relational and pluralistic theory of virtue says that virtue is not merely the quality of the mysterious internal mind of the individual, rather the disposition to be established in relation to others or the environment and that virtue is not only ethical but also encompasses intellectual, spiritual, physical, and civic virtues etc.. The implication of this relational and pluralistic virtue on the theory of self-cultivation is that three points can be highlighted in the cultivation of virtue: First, the role of intellect is emphasized. Second, virtue is not absolute and objective. It is relativistic, depending on the situation. Third, virtue is not an accumulated and solid quality of mind, but its presence is maintained only through its excercise. Unlike the existing theories, this conceptions of virtue and self-cultivation have the effect of resolving the mysteriousness and the absolutism formed by the subjectivity of virtue to some extent.
