상대적 R&D 투자가 재무성과에 미치는 영향

국문 초록

오늘날 고객의 다양한 니즈의 변화, 기술의 급속한 발전, 세계경제의 침체 등으로 인한 초경쟁적 시장 환경에서 기업의 R&D 투자와 재무성과와의 관계에 대한 고찰은 매우 중요한 사안이다. 하지만 이들의 관계에 대한 기존의 연구들은 일관되지 않은 상이한 결과를 보여주고 있으며 경쟁상황을 반영하지 못하고 있고 둘 사이의 과정 메커니즘을 총체적으로 고려하는데 있어 미흡한 실정이다. 따라서 본 연구는 기업의 R&D 투자가 재무성과에 미치는 영향을 보다 구체적으로 분석하기 위해, R&D 투자를 시간지체와 경쟁상황을 반영한 동종업계 내 최근 3년간 상대적 R&D 투자 정도로 측정하고, 재무성과도 R&D 투자와 무관한 재무활동의 영향을 배제하고 신제품의 시장성과를 잘 반영해 줄 수 있는 최근 영업이익성장률을 사용하였다. 나아가 둘 사이의 과정 메커니즘의 핵심요소인 동종업계 내 상대적 혁신성과(신제품개발건수)의 매개효과와 흡수역량(지식 공유, 학습 및 문제해결 역량)의 조절효과에 초점을 맞추어 연구 설계를 하였다. 실증분석을 위해 한국생산성본부가 제조 기업을 대상으로 설문한 593개의 표본을 사용하여 다중회귀분석과 Sobel 테스트를 수행한 결과, 상대적 R&D 투자가 기업의 재무성과에 직접효과가 있을 뿐만 아니라 상대적 혁신성과를 매개로 하여 더 강한 간접효과를 보이고 있으며, 흡수역량은 상대적 R&D 투자와 혁신성과의 관계에서만 조절효과가 있음을 발견하였다. 이와 같은 연구 설계와 분석 결과를 바탕으로 중요한 학문적, 실무적 시사점을 제시하였다.

영문 초록

In today s hyper-competitive market environment due to diverse customer needs changes, rapid technology advances, world economic downturn, etc., it is an utmost important issue for firms to investigate the relationship between R&D investment and financial performance. Yet extant studies have failed to show consistent results, reflect competition dynamics, and holistically examine the process mechanism between the two. Therefore, in order to more rigorously examine the impact of firms R&D investment on financial performance, our study measured R&D investment as relative degree of most recent three-year R&D investment within the same sector to reflect time lag and competition dynamics and financial performance as operating income growth rate to reduce the effect from those financial activities not relevant to R&D investment and to better reflect the market performance of new products. In addition, we designed our research by focusing on the process mechanism between the two, i.e., mediating effect of relative innovation performance (number of new product development) within the sector and the moderating effect of absorptive capacity (knowledge sharing, learning and problem solving capability). For empirical analysis, we used the 593 manufacturing firm data from Korea Productivity Center survey. By employing multiple regression analyses and Sobel test, we discovered that relative R&D investment has shown not only strong direct effect on financial performance but also stronger indirect effect mediated by relative innovation performance and that absorptive capacity has exhibited strong moderating effect between relative R&D investment and financial performance. Based on these results along with research design, we provided profound academic and practical insights.
