남성 독거노인의 공동체 참여 과정에 관한 연구

국문 초록

이 연구의 목적은 남성 독거노인의 공동체 참여 과정과 그에 따른 경험의 의미를 탐색하는 데 있다. 연구 참여자는 공동체 활동에 참여하고 있는 남성 독거노인 12명이다. 심층면접 자료는 근거이론 연구방법으로 분석하였다. 남성 독거노인의 공동체 참여 경험의 단계별 변화는 역할 상실로 인한 고립 단계, 다시 일어서는 단계, 어울림 단계, 협력적 활동 단계, 가족 밖 가족 구성 단계로 나타났다. 남성 독거노인들은 공동체 참여과정을 통해 주체성을 형성시켰으며 타인과의 긍정적 상호작용은 안정적 사회적응을 이루는 밑거름이 되었다. 남성 독거노인은 공동체 활동의 동기와 태도에 따라 ‘새로운 울타리 형성’단계와 ‘울타리 밖 구경꾼’의 단계에 이르게 된다. 남성 독거노인은 공동체 활동 이전에 절벽 앞에 위태롭게 서 있는 것 같은 일상을 살아가고 있었지만, 이것을 극복하기 위해 독립과 의존의 경계에서 주체적 방식으로 사회적 가족을 형성하였다. “가족 밖 새로운 가족”은 남성 독거노인에게 있어 동반자적 안식처이자 정서적 안식처라고 할 수 있다. 이 안식처는 서로 의지할 수 있는 곳이자 혈연중심 가족 안에서 충분히 채울 수 없는 정서적인 위안을 얻는 곳이었다. 본 연구는 남성 독거노인의 관점에서 공동체를 통한 대안적 가족의 형성 과정을 발견하고, 노년기 공동체를 형성하기 위해 고려해야 할 점을 탐색했다는데 의의가 있다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to understand the meaning of community for elderly men living alone and to explore the process of how the community changes elderly lives. The study participants were 12 elderly men living alone who are currently participating in community activities. In-depth interview data were analyzed by the grounded theory research method. The community participation experience of elderly men living alone has developed from isolation stage to re-emergence stage, cohesion stage, cooperative activity stage, and forming-families-outside-his-family stage in the course of time. Elderly men living alone formed subjectivity through the process of community participation and positive interactions with others became the basis for stable social adaptation. Depending on the attitude and motivation for community activities, elderly men living alone will reach the stage of ‘new fence formation and ‘an observer outside the fence. Although elderly men living alone had lived in a dangerous routine as if they were standing in front of a cliff before participating in community activities, they subjectively formed a social family on the border of independence and dependence in order to solve these problems. The “new family outside the family” is a companion and emotional sanctuary for elderly men living alone. This sanctuary was a place where one can rely on one another and gain emotional comfort that can not be satisfied within the blood-tied family. This study s significance in that it discovered the formation process of an alternative family through the community from the viewpoint of elderly men living alone and explored what to consider to form an elderly community.
