현대 한국어 주격 조사 ‘이/가’의 교체는 보충법적 교체인가

국문 초록

현대 한국어 주격 조사 ‘이/가’의 교체는 음운론적 조건에 의한 것이면서 음운 규칙 으로는 이형태 사이가 설명되지 않는다는 공통된 인식이 존재하면서도 이를 규칙적 교체로 보는 경우도 있고 불규칙적 교체로 보는 경우도 있으며 보충법적 교체로 보 는 경우도 있고 그렇지 않은 경우도 있다. 그러나 우선 음운 규칙은 음운 교체를 위한 것이라는 점에서 형태소 전체를 문제 삼는 형태소 교체와 구별할 필요가 있다. 형태소 교체의 규칙성은 철저하게 형태소가 교체하는 데 있어서의 규칙성을 따져야 하는데 이때 규칙성을 판단하는 기준은 ‘예측 가능성’이라고 할 수 있다. 또한 동일 한 교체 유형이 존재하지 않는 경우에는 해당 형태소의 교체만으로 규칙성을 판단 해야 한다. 이를 기준으로 한다면 현대 한국어 주격 조사 ‘이/가’의 교체는 동일한 교체 유형이 존재하지 않으면서 예외 없이 예측 가능하므로 규칙적 교체라고 할 수 있다. 음운 규칙은 규칙적 교체를 보장하지만 규칙적 교체가 반드시 음운 규칙을 필요로 하는 것은 아니다. 이에 대해 음운론적 조건은 규칙적 교체에서도 발견되고 불규칙적 교체에서도 발견되므로 교체의 규칙성에는 아무런 영향력을 끼치지 못한 다는 것을 알 수 있다. 현대 한국어 주격 조사 ‘이/가’의 교체가 규칙적인 교체라면 이를 보충법적 교체로 볼 수 없다. 보충법적 교체란 형태소의 교체가 불규칙적인 것 가운데서도 극단에 속하는 것에만 한정되므로 규칙적 교체라는 말은 곧 해당 교 체가 보충법적 교체가 아니라는 것을 의미하기 때문이다. 더더군다나 현대 한국어 주격 조사 ‘이/가’는 패러다임을 양분하고 있으므로 어느 것이 어느 것을 ‘보충’한다 고 보기 어렵다. 다만 통시적인 사실을 염두에 둘 때 주격 조사 ‘이/가’의 교체는 불규칙적 교체, 그 가운데서도 보충법적 교체에서 출발하여 규칙적 교체로 발달한 것임을 알 수 있다.

영문 초록

The alternation of subjective case marker ‘i/ka’ in modern Korean is phonologically conditioned and is not explained by a phonological rule. However, there are different views on whether this alternation can be explained in terms of regularity and suppletion. Firstly, the phonological rule must be separate from a morphemic alternation in that it is for phonological alternation. Therefore the regularity of morphemic alternation should be decided according to the predictability of morphemic alternation itself. In this regard, the alternation of subjective case marker ‘i/ka’ in modern Korean is regular. A phonological rule guarantees a regular alternation, but a regular alternation does not require a phonological rule. Phonological condition can be resulted in either regular alternation or irregular alternation. Therefore, it does not affect the regularity of alternation critically. If it is true that the alternation of subjective case marker ‘i/ka’ in modern Korean is regular, this automatically indicates that the alternation of subjective case marker ‘i/ka’ in modern Korean is not a kind of suppletive alternation in that a suppletive alternation presupposes an irregular alternation. But it is necessary to point out that the alternation of subjective case marker ‘i/ka’ in Korean is originated from suppletion. In other words, the alternation of subjective case marker ‘i/ka’ in modern Korean has developed from irregular into regular.
