영문 초록

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects on the condyle of rats following extirpation of salivary glands. For this study, 48 Sprague - Dawley rats were used as the experimental animals. As the control group, 3 animals were used, and other 45 animals were divided into 3 experimental groups. The operations for each experimental group were as follows ; Group 1 : extirpation of parotid gland, Group 2 : extirpation of submandibular gland, Group 3 : extirpation of parotid and submandibular glands. The experimental animals were sacrificed with heart perfusion(10% neutral formalin) 3 days, 1, 2, 3, and 4 weeks after the experiment. The specimens were embedded within the paraffin, sectioned with 4-6㎛, and stained with H-E, PAS reaction, and van-Gieson stain. After these procedures, specimens were observed under the light microscope. The results were as follows ; 1. Some degenerative changes as pyknotic nuclei and squamous metaplasia were appeared in 3 days, 1 week and 2 weeks after extirpation of parotid or submandibular gland, but began to recover from the 3 weeks after the experiments. 2. The more severe cellular changes of the rat condylar cartilage were observed in the group of extirpation of parotid gland than submandibular gland. 3. The cellular changes were more marked in the group of extirpation of submandibular and parotid gland than extirpation of submandibular or parotid gland. (at all of the fibrous layer, proliferative zone and hypertrophic zone) 4. Recovery was not observed to the 4 weeks after extirpation of submandibular and parotid glands. 5. At all groups, the thinning of proliferative zone was observed after extirpation of the salivary glands.
