이 논문은 교회 문헌을 중심으로 하여, 오늘날 다원화 사회와 신자유주의 문화 속에 있는 가톨릭 대학이 존재해야 하는 이유와 진정 가야 할 길이 무엇인가를 모색 한다. 가톨릭 대학이 일반 대학과 다른 사명이 있다면 그것은 복음 선교의 사명이다. 가톨릭 대학에서는 학생들을 내부로부터 변화시키는 것을 복음 선교의 가장 중요한 축으로 삼는다. 이를 위해서 교양교육을 통해 오늘날 지나치게 세분화된 전공교육에서 오는 정신의 빈곤화를 극복하도록 도와준다. 특히 신학은 신앙과 이성 간의 대화 그리고 세계관을 포함하고 있고 인간 실존에 대한 영원히 지속되는 질문에 답을 찾게 하기 때문에 교양교육에서 가장 중요한 역할을 담당한다. 가톨릭 대학의 정체성은 근본적으로 그곳에서 연구하고 교육하는 교수들에게 달려 있다. 개별 학과목에 능통하면서도 동시에 신학 지식이 풍부한 가톨릭 신자 교수들이 신앙과 이성 간의 관계 차원의 인식론적 문제들을 다루고 가르침으로써 학생들에게 증거의 삶을 보여 주게 된다. 가톨릭 대학은 이런 능력을 구비한 교수와 직원을 필요로 한다. 가톨릭 대학은 복음과 문화 간의 풍요로운 대화를 통하여 교회로 하여금 다양한 문화들을 더 잘 이해하게 하고, 동시에 다양한 문화의 사람들이 신앙을 보다 잘 이해할 수 있도록 하여 교회를 돕는다. 이것은 중세 시대의 토마스 아퀴나스가 교회를 위해서 학문적으로 한 역할과 같은 것이다. 가톨릭 대학은 교육기관으로서의 독특한 방식으로 복음을 선포함으로써 교회의 부르심에 응답하고 있는 것이다.

영문 초록

In a world where diverse cultures and values meet and clash on a daily basis, the time has come for Catholic universities carefully to reassess their founding philosophies and the course they have set for the future, in order to facilitate their adaptation to a truly diverse society. Perhaps the most fundamental difference between Catholic and secular (ie. non-Catholic) universities lies in Catholic universities'mandate to incorporate evangelical missionary work in its curriculum. Fomenting spiritual change in students is the ultimate educational goal at Catholic universities. Liberal arts education is crucial for achieving this goal because it offers students a retreat from a learning environment where the practical applicability of knowledge is overemphasized. Liberal arts courses at Catholic universities, and especially the study of theology, allow students to understand themselves through considering deeper, more eternal questions concerning human nature and ultimately concerning God. Catholic education, by serving as the mediator in the dialog between faith and reason, aids students in confronting these profound questions and ultimately aids them in forming an understanding of the meaning of human existence. In this capacity, it is educators at Catholic universities who can and must playa key role. Catholic universities are in need of educators who can serve as exemplars for students through both their faith in Catholicism and their expertise as instructors and researchers in their respective fields. The fundamental value of Catholic universities lies in their role as intermediaries and/or facilitators of communication between the Church and wider society. The Catholic Church can keep pace with cultural change, and at the same time, members of society may gain a better understanding of the Church through educational programs offered by Catholic universities thereby fulfilling for the Church precisely the role that was in the Middle Ages performed by St. Thomas Aquinas. In the present era, the responsibility for this evangelical work rests not upon one individual alone, but rather upon our educational institutions collectively. Catholic universities ought consciously to take up the mantle of this important responsibility.
