국문 초록

땅의 형세를 특정한 사물의 모양에 비유하여 설명하는 喝形論은 중국의 당대와 송대에 이론적 체계가 갖추어졌다. 갈형론은 형세학파의 학자들에 의해 체계화되면서 풍수서에 수록되기도 했는데, 廖瑀의 『喝形名目』과 張 子微의 『喝形圖格』 등이 대표적이다. 중국의 풍수가 한국에 도입되면서 갈형론도 수용되었는데, 아직까지도 마을 의 풍수를 중심으로 계속 이어져 내려오고 있다. 갈형론은 풍수 형세론의 한 분야로 이론적 엄밀성은 상대적으로 낮다. 땅의 형세를 특정한 사물에 비유하는 것은 사람에 따라 달라질 수 있기 때문이다. 갈형론은 이론적 엄밀성은 떨어지지만 형세를 전체적으로 조망하고 이해하는 데에 강점이 있다. 특히 갈형론에서는 난해한 용어와 방위 등을 사용하는 대신에 시각적으로 표현된 山圖를 사용하기 때문에 형세를 쉽게 이해할 수 있다. 갈형론과 관련된 담론은 일반인도 쉽게 이해할 수 있기 때문에 풍수의 대중화에 기여했다. 이러한 현상은 중국보다는 조선에서 강 하게 나타난다. 조선의 유명 명당을 답사하여 풍수적 해석을 기록한 책에서는 대부분 갈형론에 기초하고 있다. 이는 평지가 적고 구릉성 산지가 많은 지형적 특성에 기인하는 것이기도 하다.

영문 초록

The physical shape theory, which explains topographical features of a terrain by comparing them with the shape of certain things, established its theoretical foundation in the Tang and Song dynasties. The physical shape theory was adopted in fengshui books when scholars of the form theory accommodated it. Typical are LiaoYu’s Hexingmingmu and ZhangZiwei’s Hexingtuge. Korean fengshui practitioners accommodated the physical shape theory, introduced from China, and it is still being practiced in the villages. The physical shape theory, a part of the geomantic form theory, has relatively low theoretical precision. Comparing topographical features of an area with specific things result in different interpretations by geomancers. The physical shape theory, while being poor in theoretical clarity, however, has the merit of observing and understanding topographical features as a whole. One can easily understand the features because physical shape theory uses geomantic maps in place of difficult terms and directions. Discourses on the physical shape theory, being easy for general public to understand, have contributed to the popularization of fengshui. Such phenomena seem to have appeared more conspicuously in Korea than in China. Korean fengshui books giving geomantic explanations based on surveys of distinguished propitious sites are mostly based on the physical shape theory. This is also attributable to Korea’s mountainous geography with limited fields.
