세계지도 제작에 반영된 19세기 일본의 울릉도ㆍ독도 인식

국문 초록

조선의 울릉도와 우산도에 관한 지리정보는 18세기 초, 청나라에서 제작된 「황여전람도」가 프랑스로 전해졌을 때, 그 안에 포함되어 비로소 서구의 세계지도 제작에 반영되었다. 18세기 후반이후, 영국과 프랑스 등의 국가들이 한국의 동해상을 항해하면서 울릉도와 독도를 발견하였는데, 그 과정에서 기존의 정보와 탐험을 통해 새로발견된 정보가 지도상에 공존하기도 하고, Argonaut와 같은 가상의 섬이 지도상에 나타나기도 하였다. 이 연구는 세계지도 제작의 역사를 통하여 울릉도와 독도가 외부세계에 알려지는 과정을 파악하고자 하였다. 특히, 19세기일본의 세계지도 제작 과정에 울릉도와 독도가 어떻게 반영되었는가를 추적하였다. 19세기 중엽, 일본은 영국에서 제작된 세계지도를 일본식으로 모사하는 과정에서 큰 오류를 범하였다. 즉, 기존에 일본에서 인식했던 竹島(울릉도)와 松島(독도) 명칭을 서구인들이 만들어놓은 프레임(독도가 빠진 Argonaut와 Dagelet)에 무비판적으로 적용하는 과정에서 松島(독도)는 다즐레(울릉도)에 비정되었다. 한편, 일본은 서구에서 제작된 지도를 통해 알게된 리앙쿠르 명칭을 한 동안 따라 쓰다가, 1904-5년 무렵, 지도상의 아르고노트를 울릉도 북쪽 연안으로 옮겨 그리면서, 아르고노트에 부여되었던 일본식 명칭(竹島)을 리앙쿠르 암 명칭에 오버랩시켜 오늘날까지 독도를 竹島로 부르고 있다.

영문 초록

The geographical information about Ulleungdo and Usando in Joseon came to be reflected in Western world cartography when it was contained in 「Huangyu quan lan tu」 made in Ching Dynasty and was introduced into France early in the eighteenth century. Since the late eighteenth century, such countries as the United Kingdom and France have sailed the East Sea of Korea and found Ulleungdo and Dokdo; consequently, both the existing information and the new one obtained through the exploration were contained in the maps, or an imaginary island, Argonaut, was found on the maps. This research aims to examine the way Ulleungdo and Dokdo become known to the world by tracing the history of how world maps were produced in modern times. Especially, this study focuses on the presentation of Ulleungdo and Dokdo in the world maps drawn by some Japanese cartographers during the nineteenth century. In the mid-nineteenth century, Japan made an enormous error in copying the world map made in the United Kingdom: the name, Matsusima(Dokdo), was replaced with Dagelet(Ulleungdo) when they uncritically placed the names, Dakeshima(Ulleungdo) and Matsusima(Dokdo), as recognized by the Japanese people, in the Western frame(Dagelet and Argonaut, with Dokdo omitted). Japan used the name, Liancourt, from the maps made in the West; then, in 1904 or 1905, they relocated Argonaut near the northern coast of Ulleungdo on the maps and overlapped the Japanese name, Dakeshima, which had been given to Argonaut, with the name of Liancourt rocks; since then, they have called Dokdo Dakeshima.
