국문 초록

영화 <노아>는 2014년 개봉과 더불어 '반(反)기독교영화'라는 비난에 휩싸였다. 성서를 '있는 그대로' 묘사하지 않았다는 이유에서다. 그러나 경전에 대한 기계적ㆍ문자적 읽기에 집착하는 근본주의 신앙은 성서를 문화콘텐츠로 활용하고자 하는 대중예술의 입지를 좁힐 뿐만 아니라, 기독교 자체를 독선적으로 만들 우려가 있어, 평화로운 공존이 화두인 이 시대에는 더욱 유해하다 아니할 수 없다. 이에 연구자는 <노아>가 펼쳐내는 인문학적 상상력을 높이 평가하되, 노아를 하나님의 창조세계의 수호자, 특히 동물들의 보호자로 설정한 점을 눈여겨보고자 한다. 전통적으로 기독교인들에게 '노아의 방주' 이야기는 '의인' 노아와 그 가족의 구원 드라마로 읽히는 경우가 많았다. 동물들도 방주에 탔다는 성서의 증언을 모르지 않으나, 그 점이 두드러지게 조명되는 경우란 드물었다. 구속사와 관련하여 이러한 인간중심주의야말로 전통 기독교 신학의 뚜렷한 특징 혹은 한계인 바, 그 뿌리는 인간의 존재론적 지위와 정체를 '하나님의 형상'으로 묘사한 창세기적 보도에 있다고 하겠다. 하나님의 형상이 인간을 피조세계의 나머지 존재들과 구분 짓는 근거로, 나아가 동식물을 비롯한 자연만물보다 우월한 증거로 해석되다보니, 동물권 운동 따위는 기독교와 친화적일 수 없었다. 그러나 영화 <노아>는 하나님의 형상에 대한 새로운 해석의 실마리를 제시한다. 인간은 자신의 어떤 고유한 능력이나 속성 때문에 하나님의 형상이 되는 것이 아니고, 오직 하나님의 자비를 따라 행동할 때에만 하나님의 형상이 된다는 깨달음 말이다. 그리하여 연구자는 해체철학자 데리다의 개념을 빌어 노아의 방주를 일종의 '탈구 공간'으로 재해석해본다. 인간과 동물 사이에 주종관계가 성립되지 않으며 심지어 동물들 사이의 먹이사슬 구조마저 해소된 그 공간이야말로, 두발가인으로 상징된 제국주의 체제를 전복하는 '하나님 나라'의 은유로 손색이 없다. 이처럼 하나님의 형상에 대한 '관계론적' 해석, 동물의 '권리'에 대한 근본적 성찰, 노아의 방주에 대한 실험적 재해석 과정을 거친 뒤에, 이러한 논의가 광우병과 구제역과 조류독감이 창궐하는 우리 시대에 어떤 의미가 있는지를 간략히 짚어보는 것으로 글을 맺는다.

영문 초록

, a 2014 Hollywood epic biblically inspired film, has been beset by controversies and criticisms from Korean-Christian-audiences on the ground of that it does not portrait the story of Noah 'as it is' in the Bible. However, it is apprehended that the fundamentalism, which is the demand for a strict adherence to the literal and mechanical reading of Bible, constricts the popular art not to utilize the Bible-contents by no means and also makes Christianity itself behave self-righteously, so that it can be harmful to our age having responsibility to grope for the peaceful coexistence. In that sense, the author highly appreciates the theological imagination, expecially its description of Noah as the guardian of God's creation. As a matter of fact, the traditional reading of the story of Noah's Ark mostly tends to limit to the God's drama for delivering 'the righteous' Noah and his family. Even if most Christians know that Noah brought into the Ark with a male and a female of every kind of animal and bird as well as a male and a female of every reptile because God did not want them to be destroyed, it is seldom, if ever, take notice of that. It is resulted from the anthropocentric understanding based on the biblical testimony saying that God created humans in 'the Image of God'. As the traditional theology has considered 'the Image of God' as the ground of differentiation between human beings and the rest of all beings in God's creation and even the evidence of superiority of humans to the other beings, it is difficult for many Christians to be eco-friendly. Besides, the film suggests new interpretation of the Image of God as something relational, not substantial attribute, that is, we become the Image of God only when we love the others as God did as constant as ever since He created the world. In this context, the author tries to reinterpret the Noah's Ark as 'the space of coming out of joint' borrowing from Jacques Derrida. It is safe to say that in the way of that there is no more the subject-object relation between humans and animals, the Noah's Ark can be the metaphor of the Kingdom of God which subverts the imperialistic system symbolized by Tubal Cain in the film. Furthermore, the author mentions at the conclusion what this discussion has meaning in the age of a worldwide epidemic such as mad cow disease, foot and mouse disease, avian influenza, and so forth.
