국문 초록

이 논문의 목적은 미국대중문화에서 중요한 역할을 차지하고 있는 슈퍼히어로와 영성의 관계를 살펴보는 것이다. 영성이라는 종교적 체험은 대중문화의 꽃이라고 부를 수 있는 슈퍼히어로와 어딘가 어울리지 않는 것 같다. 그러나 나의 주장은 슈퍼히어로와 그것을 소비하는 행위는 존 카푸토가 이야기한 종교 없는 종교라는 현대의 조건을 보여준다는 것이다. 슈퍼히어로의 종교적 양상은 발터 벤야민의 개념인 "불경한 계시"라고 보기는 어렵다. 벤야민이 이 개념을 생각했을 때 염두에 두었던 것은 일상에 균열을 초래하는 초현실주의 운동이기 때문이다. 나는 들뢰즈와 가타리의 얼굴성이라는 개념을 통해 슈퍼히어로 문화현상을 논의하고자 한다. 이 얼굴성의 개념에서 중요한 것은 바로 정동이다. 슈퍼히어로에서 정동의 문제는 코스튬을 통해 나타난다. 코스튬은 슈퍼히어로에게 인격을 부여하는 역할을 하는데, 어떻게 보면 이것 자체가 곧 슈퍼히어로의 본질이라고 할 수 있다. 코스튬이라는 외양을 걸치면 슈퍼히어로라는 본질이 드러나는 것이다. 이런 의미에서 코스튬은 개인과 슈퍼히어로적인 것을 서로 연결하는 매개이다. 코스튬을 걸친 슈퍼히어로는 더 이상 세계 내에 있는 존재가 아니다. 코스튬은 평범한 개인을 슈퍼히어로로 만들어주는 문턱 같은 것이다. 슈퍼히어로는 선험적 차원은 결코 실현되지 않는다는 종교적 믿음의 조건에서 종교를 사유하는 세속적인 방식으로서, 영성을 통해 세계를 '재신비화'하려는 사례이다.

영문 초록

The aim of my essay is to discuss the relationship between superheros and spirituality. Spirituality, the religious experience, does not seem to do with superheros, the apex of popular culture. My argument lies in the way in which the popular phenomena related to the consumption of superheros stuff reveals the very condition of modern religion, as John Caputo says, religion without religion. I argue that superheros' religious aspect is not like what Walter Benjamin discuss in terms of "profane illumination", which defintely presupposed surrealist movments, a high cultural pursuit towards an aesthetic break in daily life. I draw on Gilles Deleuze's and Felix Guattari's conceptualization of faciality, the expression of affects in related to a face, to understand the phenomena of superheros. In this sense, the arguments focus on the meaning of costume which seems to endow superheros with personality. The costume is the mediation in between the indiviual and the super heroic. The super heroic costumed existence is no longer the being in the world. The costume is a treshold to the extent that there is a turning point through which the average individuals are transformed an extraordinary superheros. I argue that superheros are the examples of 're-enchantment' towards spirituality, the way to think about religion in a secular way, under the condition, which any religious belief on the transcedental dimension is not able to be realized.
