이 글의 목적은 자크 라캉이 충동의 대상으로 소개한 목소리 개념을 토대로 윌리엄 워즈워스의 「구디 블레이크와 해리 길」을 분석하는데 있다. 라캉의 이론 속에서 충동이 어떤 의미를 갖는지 정확히 이해하는 작업이 우선 선행되어야 하는데, 라캉에 따르면 충동은 본능과 달리 유기체적 차원만으로는 설명될 수 없는 것으로, 재현 질서와의 관계 속에서 고려되어야 한다. 정신분석학적 의미의 육체는 더 이상 자연이 아니지만 아직 문화도 아닌 '사이 공간'을 의미하며, 충동은 바로 이 육체의 차원에 속한 것이다. 충동의 대상인 목소리는 무엇보다 말없이 침묵하는 것으로 특징지어진다. 충동의 침묵은 그러나 단순히 소리의 부재로 고려되어서는 안된다. 말하기의 영역 속에 이미 항상 각인되어 있지만 그 영역으로 환원될 수 없는 소리가 바로 충동의 침묵이기 때문이다. 믈라덴 돌라가 충동의 침묵이, 다시 말해 실재계적 침묵이 상징계적 침묵이나 상상계적 침묵과의 관계 속에서 이해되어야 한다고 주장한 이유가 여기에 있다. 「구디 블레이크와 해리 길」에 대한 읽기는 해리의 몸에서 나는 소리가 어떻게 충동의 침묵으로 읽힐 수 있는지 그 이유를 찾아보는 작업에서 시작된다. 해리의 떨림을 충동의 소리 내지는 충동의 침묵으로 고려함으로써 우리는, 충동이 주체를 구성하는 근본 조건이라는 정신분석학적 통찰을 보다 면밀하게 검토해볼 수 있는데, 해리와 구디의 만남이 해리의 근원적 떨림을 감추기 위한 방어적 팬터지로 해석될 수 있기 때문이다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this paper is to attempt to re-read Wordsworth's "Goody Blake and Harry Gill" on the basis of Lacan's account of the voice as the objet petit a, the object of the drive. For this re-reading of "Goody Blake and Harry Gill", we first need to get the precise idea of the distinction between the instinct and the drive in Lacanian psychoanalytic theory, since the latter should be considered as open to symbolic displacement and substitution, while the former is simply subject to the laws of nature. But the important thing to retain here is that the drive cannot be reduced to a biological fact, but neither is it a product of representation. The drive is thus located in the in-between which consists in the place belonging neither to Nature nor to Culture. The voice as the object of the drive is described as silent, which means that the silence of the drive does not simply point to an absence of sound, but rather it corresponds to what is always already inscribed within the symbolic order but at the same time remains irreducible to it. This is why Dolar claims that the silence of the drives should be explored in relation to symbolic silence and imaginary silence. The reading of "Goody Blake and Harry Gill" begins by providing an answer as to how relentless chattering of Harry's teeth is interpreted as the silence of the drive. This alerts us to the idea that the objet petit a which is a point within the symbolic order that remains essentially foreign actually serves as the condition of possibility of the symbolic order itself, because the story of Harry and Goody can be read as a sort of defence against Harry's originary condition.
