영문 초록

This study aims to extend academic and practical interests in the 5ㆍ18 uprising in Gwangju to Mokpo city, Korea. Generally speaking, it is thought that the 5ㆍ18 Gwangju uprising has attracted interests in academic circles as well as in the public sphere. However, the 5ㆍ18 uprising in Mokpo has not been interested in those spheres since 1980. It can be interpreted as a cultural approach to provide an appropriate language to the people of Mokpo's feelings and emotions concerning the 5ㆍ18 uprising, which has been alienated and neglected in the 5ㆍ18 discourses. Especially, this approach investigates the past and present of this event as a whole, in that they also struggle against military dictatorship and violence by military forces for the democratization processes of Korea at that time. Like lots of Gwangju citizens, they are neglected and rejected in the 5ㆍ18 discourses. For the purpose of this study, I will attempt to interpret and re-interpret the cultural meanings of the 5ㆍ18 uprising in Mokpo. In order to perform this purpose, I will regard the 5ㆍ18 uprising in Mokpo as a ritual event that so many social groups contested for to make a local identity in Mokpo, and I will try to approach this cultural ritual as a historical event to construct a Mokpo identity, from a cultural point of view. It is a fact that studies on the 5ㆍ18 uprising in Mokpo are seldom dealt with in an academic and practical field over last 27 years, and the 5ㆍ18 uprising in Mokpo has not been given attention to by ordinary peoples. Mainly, the focus of the 5ㆍ18 uprising in Gwangju has been on the democratic movement and mass struggle in Gwangju. From this perspective, it can be said that the processes of production, diffusion, and consumption of discourses on the 5ㆍ18 uprising in Mokpo have a relationship with making the local identity in Mokpo, so-called the 'Mokpo identity'. And in this sense, it is significant that the specific position of Mokpo in Korean modern history should be considered in the making of the 'Mokpo identity'. For this purpose, this paper investigates how the 5ㆍ18 uprising in Mokpo had been produced and spread from Gwangju to Mokpo from May 21. 1980 until May 28. 1980, and how peoples in Mokpo had responded to this event in that time. In this regard, this study can be referred to as a cultural approach to the 5ㆍ18 uprising in Mokpo for interpretation of cultural characteristics and meanings of the 5ㆍ18 uprising in Mokpo.
