Russia as surreal space in literary works of Taras Shevchenko

국문 초록

본 논문은 우크라이나의 국민시인이라고 불리는 타라스 쉐브첸코의 시에서 나타난 서사공간 종류에 대해 소개하고 있으며, 그 중 초현실적 공간으로 구분되는 도시공간의 특성과 이러한 공간의 작품 속에서의 표현과 그 의미에 대해 연구하고 있다. 기존의 연구는 대체적으로 쉐브첸코의 작품에서 목가적인 풍경에만 집중하고 도시공간의 묘사가 없다고 간주하면서 이러한 공간이 존재하지 않는다는 평까지 내린 바 있다. 그러나 본인은 쉐브첸코 작품에서 나타난 러시아와 그 당시 러시아의 수도이던 상트페테르부르크라는 공간을 분석한 결과, 도시는 구체적인 묘사나 명확한 명칭이 기재되어 있지 않더라도 쉐브첸코의 작품들에서 잠재적으로 존재한다는 것을 확인할 수 있었다. 뿐만 아니라 많은 쉐브첸코의 작품들에서 도시공간과 러시아의 공간이 배경에 내포되어 있다는 사실을 파악하는 것은 그의 시작(詩作)의 전체적 서사공간을 더욱 깊고 정확하게 이해하는 데에 중요한 역할을 한다. 쉐브첸코의 서사공간에는 이른바 현실세계와 초현실세계가 함께 존재하는데 우크라이나만이 현실적 세계가 될 수 있다. 즉 그에게는 우크라이나를 제외한 모든 다른 공간, 그리고 그 중 러시아와 그 수도인 상트페테르부르크는 일종의 반(反)세계를 뜻하며 그것은 우크라이나와 대비된다. 본인은 쉐브첸코의 시에서 나타난 상트페테르부르크의 상징적 의미와 우크라이나 민속상징들을 비교 분석하면서 상트페테르부르크가 시인에게 지독함과 잔인성을 지닌 그리고 어떨 때는 지옥과 같은 초현실적인 세계라는 사실을 밝혔다. 쉐브첸코 시속의 러시아는 그 수도의 상트페테르부르크와 같은 초현실적 이미지를 가지고 있으며 신성 모독적이고 도덕이 몰락된 공간으로 등장한다. 시 속에 러시아가 직접적으로 등장하지 않을 때도 쉐브첸코는 러시아가 우크라이나의 비참한 현실의 원인이라고 믿었으며, 분노나 서러움의 표현을 통해 그는 이 두 가지의 공간을 잠재적으로 연관시켰다고 본다.

영문 초록

This paper addresses the question of how the space of Russia in general and St.Petersburg in particular is depicted in Taras Shevchenko's works This paper discusses how the space of Russia is represented in Taras Shevchenko's poetry. It argues that although Russia's image is often vague and ambiguous to the extent of surrealistic it is a latently present at the background of many Shevchenko's poems and influences perception of other kinds of space as well the understanding of Shevchenko's literary universe in whole. After a short overview of previous research, the paper introduces different types of literary space that can be differentiated in Shevchenko's poetic works and provides a brief explanation on each of them. The urban space of St.Petersburg is analyzed as the 'anti-world' which is counterpositioned with that of the 'real world' of Ukraine. The paper examines symbolic connections of Shevchenko's St.Petersburg with Ukrainian folklore and emphasizes the infernality of the former. The last part of the paper analyzes the image of Russia in Shevchenko's works to find out that the larger space of Russia has similar surreal qualities to those of a smaller space which St. Petersburg is. At the same time, Russia is presented in Shevchenko's works as a profane space to which spiritual decline, evilness and amorality are intrinsic.
