경봉스님의 선사상 일고(一考)

국문 초록

  본 논문은 근현대의 고승으로 알려진 경봉선사(1892-1982)의 선사상에 대해 스님의 법어집인 『법해』와 『니가누고』, 서간문 형식인 『삼소굴소식』등을 통해 살펴보고자 한다.
  경봉선사는 근현대불교사의 산 증인이라고 해도 과언이 아닐 정도로 1892년에 출생하여 일제강점기와 6.25전쟁을 겪는 등 우리민족의 수난과 함께하며 1982년까지의 생애를 살았다.
  그는 36살 되던 해 겨울 갑자기 벽이 무너지듯 시야가 툭 트이면서 오묘한 일원상만이 드러나는 경지를 체험했다. 그래도 쉬지 않고 정진한 지 20여일 뒤 새벽 두시 반 문틈을 파고든 바람에 촛불이 소리를 내며 춤을 추는 모습을 본 순간 억겁의 의문이 찰나에 녹아버렸다.
  민족의 대 수난인 6.25 전쟁의 상흔이 말라갈 시기부터 1982년 입적 때까지 90노령에도 시자(侍者)의 부축을 받으며 법좌에 올라 1,000여명 이상의 대중들이 참여한 가운데 설법하였고, 가람수호(伽藍守護)에도 힘을 기울여 통도사의 삼성반월교(三星半月橋)와 장엄석등(莊嚴石燈) 18좌(座)를 세웠다. 18세부터 85세까지 67년 간 한암ㆍ용성ㆍ만공 월면(滿空 月面)ㆍ효봉 원명(曉峰 元明)등 당대 큰스님들과의 서신과 선문답 등이 『삼소굴소식』에 있는데, 한국 불교 최근세사를 조망하는 데 중요한 자료로 평가된다.
  구한말 성해스님으로 시작된 영축총림의 선맥은 그의 두 제자 구하(九河, 1872-1965)스님과 경봉(鏡峰, 1892-1982)스님이 일구고 구하스님의 상좌인 월하(月下, 1915-2003)스님과 경봉스님의 상좌인 벽안스님으로 이어진다. 1986년 영축총림으로 지정된 후 초대방장으로 월하스님이 2003년 입적할 때까지, 현재 원명스님이 2대 방장으로 이어지고 있다.
  경봉선사의 선사상으로는 크게 4가지로 살펴보았다. 첫째, 사바세계를 무대로 멋있게 살아라. 스님은 바로 이 세계에서 고뇌하고 방황하는 이들에게 삶의 활로를 보이고자 사바를 활동의 무대로 삼았던 것이다.
  둘째, 평상심시도(平常心是道). 스님은 행주좌와 어묵동정 모든 것이 ‘도’ 아님이 없음을 설하고 있다.
  셋째는 선교겸수(禪敎兼修)이다. 조사어록이나 중국의 선사들을 고루 열거하였고, 화엄경이나 반야경 법화경등 경전도 다양하게 인용하고 있음을 살펴보았다.
  넷째, 유심정토(唯心淨土)이다. 타방정토도 인정하지만 유심정토를 설하고 있다.
  이상으로 경봉선사의 선사상을 살펴본바, 많은 영향으로 출ㆍ재가자들에게 많은 영향을 끼치고 있음을 살펴보았다.

영문 초록

  This paper is focused on the life and thought of Seon Master Gyeong-Bong(鏡峰, 1892-1982) with his analects『the sea of Dharma(法海)』,『Who are you?』,『the news of Samsogul』. He experienced all the suffering that modern Korean people had done. Born in 1892, he could not avoid the suffering of the Japanese Imperialistic rule and the Korean War, and he saw with his own eyes these historical event. When he was 16 years old, he entered the Buddhist priesthood. In winter of 20 years after, 36 years old, the wall around him had been crumbled suddenly and he could see clearly without any obstacle and experienced the profound shape of a circle. He practiced severly for 20 days. Watching candle flickering in the wind he had enlightened at the dawn of the last day. All question had vanished at once.
  After that marvelous day he had preached many disciples and lay-Buddhist Buddha"s teachings that he enlightened to the last moment. Also he readjusted structures of Tong-do temple and built bridges, 18 stone lanterns. After he passed into nirvana, his disciple bhikkhu Myeong-jeong published 『the news of Samsogul』 that collected the encounter dialogue of seon(禪問答) and letter writings that corresponding with Gyeong-Bong and other Seon Master Han-Am(漢岩), Yong-Seong(龍城), Man-Gong Wol-Myeon(滿空月面), Hyo-Bong(曉峰), Won-Myeong(元明) etc. This book comes into its own as an important research material for a look-into nearest Korean Buddhism.
  He and Gu-ha(九河, 1872-1965) had carried on a seon-lineage of Yeongchuk-Chongnim, the full monastic training temple that started by his master Seong-Hae(聖海). The seon-lineage have been carried on by both Wal-Ha(月下, 1915～2003), Gu-ha"s disciple and Byeok-An(碧眼, 1901-1987), his disciple. Wal-Ha was nominated for the first Bangjang(方丈), the head of Yeongchuk-Chongrim.
  His thought can be classified into four kind. First, to live a rakish life in the world of suffering. He lived a active, vivid and vigorous life in this world to set a model to the afflicted and wandering young people. Second, everyday life is enlightenment (平常心是道). There is Tao(道) in all kind of human behaviour like moving, sitting, lying etc. Third, he practice Seon combining with study of doctrine. he had read all kind of analects of Seone Master and the Sutras like Avata？saka-S？tra(華嚴經), Saddharmapu？dar？ka-S？tra(法華經), Praj？？p？ramit？-S？tra(般若經) and others. Fourth, There is a Pure-Land(淨土) in Consciousness only. Gyeong-Bong is one of the great Seon Master in modern Korean Buddhism. His thought and life had strong influenced upon Bhikkhu, Bhikkhuni and lay Buddhist.
