영문 초록

  Most synchronic studies on the prepositional passive in present-day English so far have tried to address issues about the construction mainly from a theoretical standpoint without paying attention to the linguistic patterns actually used by the language users, thereby leaving various aspects of its uses untouched or unexplained. This paper is a corpus-based pilot study of the English prepositional passive and its main goal is to explain what English corpora tell us about the uses of the construction, suggesting what needs to be done for a more complete analysis of (relatively) rarely or infrequently used, but linguistically not less important, syntactic constructions such as the prepositional passive. The discussion of this study is mostly based on the search results of the prepositional passive construction from the ICE-GB.
