종교의 장소성과 선교전략 - 일제강점기 목포를 사례로

국문 초록

  본고는 목포를 사례로 종교의 장소성을 알고자 하였다. 일제강점기 동안 목포의 기독교(천주교와 개신교를 포함)는 조선인 거주지와 인접한 구릉에 선교거점을 세웠고, 일본불교는 조선인과 일본인 거류지 사이의 구릉에 사찰을 세웠으며, 일본신도 역시 조선인 거주지와 일본인 거류지를 모두 조망할 수 있는 구릉에 자리를 잡았다. 목포의 종교들은 선교전략에 따라 서로 다른 장소를 선택하면서도 구릉을 선호하였음을 알 수 있다. 이러한 구릉지향성에는 장소 관성, 장소 전용, 장소 권력, 그리고 장소 응집성 등의 요소들이 중요하게 상호작용하였다. 장소 응집성이란 어떤 종교가 먼저 구릉을 선택하면 다른 종교도 따라서 구릉을 선택하는 경향을 말한다. 결론적으로 일제강점기 동안 목포의 종교 장소성은 구릉지향성이었으며, 지금도 거의 계승되고 있다.

영문 초록

  This article examines the placeness of religions during the period of Japanese Imperialism. To illustrate, I suggest a case of Mokpo City, South Cholla Province. Christianity located its missionary stations on the hills near the Korean residence, Japanese Buddhism located its temples on the hills between the Korean residence and the Japanese concession, and Japanese Shintoism also located its shrines on the hill that they could command a fine view of Korean residence and Japanese concession. As a consequence, we know that most religions in Mokpo City preferred the hills in spite of their disparate missionary strategies. Such a hill orientation was influenced by the inertia of place, the appropriation of place, the power of place, and the cohesion of place. What I would call a cohesion of place here refers the hill preferring tendency that if a religion choose a hill, thε other religions choose another hill. The hills were advantageous for their supervision or Kerigma etc. After all, the placeness of religions was a hill orientation and this trends succeeded to till now in Mokpo City.
