According to F. de Saussure"s theory of language, which was one of the starting points of structualism, language is not an indication of the real world but just a sign system. A sign consists of a signifiant and a signifi?. Its combination is not based on necessity but on arbitrariness. By the way, poststructualism is derived from structuralist view of language which focuses on social and conventional meanings of language. It doesn"t concern itself with natural and mysterious aspects of language. From these critics of structualism diverge several different poststructualists. J. Derrida is known as the leading representative of poststructualism.
Since the booming period of structualism in the late 1960s, Derrida has shaken the world of western philosophy with his singular strategy of deconstruction. Derrida thought of western philosophy and its thoughts as the metaphysic of the existence (La m?taphysique de la pr?sence) based on ideas of existence (pr?sence) and center (centre). He then rejected the established philosophy and deconstructed the model of knowledge and language in terms of difference (diff?rance), logo-centrism (logo-centerisme), trace (trace), and supplement (suppl?ment) of his own making.
Derrida"s strategic thinking, however, has similarities with Taoism and Zen, which have developed the unique dialectic of being and nothing. This essay compares Derrida"s method of thinking with Zen-thoughts" way of awakening. It will illuminate their differences and implications. This attempt of comparing different thoughts could be only a small amount of the assertions of both sides, or it could cause even more problems by comparing with incomplete point of each view. Nonetheless, this comparison will be one of the moments manifesting Derrida"s limits and significances by revealing that his strategy of deconstrution is a disjunctive synthesis and that Zen-thoughts" way of thinking is directed at the real awakening.
