국문 초록

본 논문은 여순사건을 젠더사적 시각에서 재독해하여, 기존 연구가 국가폭력과 반공체제의 형성에 집중하는 동안 주변화되었던 여성의 경험을 사건의 핵심 구성요소로 재위치시킨다. 이를 위해 우선 이 글은 ‘여학생 폭도’라는 표상이 사실 여부와 무관하게 수행적 장치로 작동하며, 순진무구한 소녀를 적대적 폭력의 주체로 상상하게 함으로써 지역 공동체 전체에 낙인을 찍고, 시민을 향한 군사작전과 집단처벌을 정당화했음을 밝힌다. 이 과정에서 여성은 죄책감과 수치심의 감정을 내면화하면서 침묵을 강요당했고, 그 침묵은 장기간에 걸쳐 자기검열의 형태로 지속되었다. 또한 강간·강간미수, 강제 신체수색, 공개적 굴욕 등 성적 폭력이 반란 진압의 일환으로 반복되었음에도, 국가와 언론은 이를 철저히 은폐하고 침묵시켜 피해여성의 고통을 사회적 인식의 영역 밖으로 밀어냈다. 이러한 폭력은 단발적 사건이 아니라 여성의 몸을 적대의 표식으로 삼아 공적 공간에서 비인간화한 통치의 실천이었으며, 반공국가와 가부장제의 결합 속에서 피해 사실은 ‘말할 수 없음’으로 봉인되었다. 남겨진 여성들의 고통은 시신 수습과 생존노동, 연좌제에 따른 배제, 만성적 트라우마로 이어지며 전후의 일상 속에서도 폭력이 지속되는 장기지속성을드러낸다. 결론적으로 여순사건의 여성 문제는 내전적 무력충돌 하의 성별 기반 폭력으로, 한국현대사의 기억과 과거사 논의가 젠더와 폭력의 교차적 구조 속에서 재성찰될 필요가 있다는 시대적 과제를 제기하고 있다.

영문 초록

This study reinterprets the Yeosu–Suncheon Incident from a gender-historical perspective, repositioning women’s experiences― marginalized in scholarship preoccupied with state violence and the formation of the anti-communist regime―as a central component of the event. It demonstrates that the figure of the so-called “female student rioter” functioned as a performative construct, regardless of its factual basis, by transforming the image of an innocent girl into that of a violent subversive. This discourse branded the entire local community, legitimized military operations and collective punishment against civilians, and internalized guilt and shame among women, compelling prolonged silence and self-censorship. Sexual violence—including rape, attempted rape, forced body searches, and public humiliation—was repeatedly perpetrated in the course of suppression operations, yet the state and the press thoroughly concealed these acts, erasing the suffering of victims from public awareness. Such violence was not an accumulation of isolated incidents but a systematic practice of governance that dehumanized women’s bodies as symbols of enmity. Within the intersection of anti-communist nationalism and patriarchy, women’s experiences were sealed into an enduring condition of “unspeakability.” The suffering of surviving women—manifested in corpse recovery, exhausting survival labor, social exclusion through guilt-by-association policies, and chronic trauma—reveals the longue durée of postwar violence that persisted in everyday life. Ultimately, this study argues that the gendered dimensions of the Yeosu–Suncheon Incident constitute gender-based violence under conditions of internal armed conflict, posing a contemporary challenge to re-examine the memory and historical discourse of modern Korea through the intersecting structures of gender and violence.
