Objectives : This paper is an attempt to discuss “things” in the Huangdi-Neijing. Here, “things” refers to the medical objects and realities described in the Neijing. It aims to engage with recent interest in ontology within the humanities and social sciences—particularly drawing on anthropological discussions of multiple ontologies—to explore the “things” of the Neijing, and to clarify the implications for education and medical practice, especially in the context of newly emerging clinical approaches.
Methods : In order to discuss “things” in the Neijing, this paper examines the chapters “Discourse on the Comprehension of Heaven’s Truth,” “Discourse on Regulating the Spirit in Accordance with the Qi,” and “Discourse on the Correspondence of Yin and Yang with the Image,” juxtaposing biomedical things and practices on its ontological premise.
Results & Conclusions : The “things” in biomedicine are identified and become the subject of medical practice through ways of thinking such as reductionism. In contrast, the “things” in the Neijing are not seen as isolated entities but are interconnected, with an emphasis on flow and continuity. This analogical understanding of existence in the Neijing is also reflected in its mode of description. From the perspective of modern academic disciplines, fields such as geoscience, thermodynamics, climatology, pharmacology, psychology, psychiatry, and diagnostics could all be discussed simultaneously within a single chapter of the Neijing, which is linked to the East Asian understanding of existence. Discussion on the ontological mode in the foundational texts is not only crucial for preventing students from falling into simplistic hierarchy between biomedicine and non-biomedicine, but also essential for making them aware of the specific ways in which Korean Medicine engages with its objects. Ontological understanding also plays a role in the emergence of new clinical practices in Korean Medicine.
