In recent years, recurring congestion at major ports within the global maritime transportation network has not only hindered the functionality of individual ports but has also disrupted global maritime systems and distorted international supply chains. This study aims to analyze the operational impact of a ship's time in port on overall efficiency from both economic and environmental perspectives, taking port congestion into account. To achieve this, we employed a simulation methodology based on System Dynamics to explore the relationships among port time, voyage speed, operating costs, and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The main findings are as follows: Firstly, there is a strong correlation between a ship's operational efficiency and the quality of port operations, particularly regarding port time. The results indicate that as port time decreases, both operating costs and GHG emissions significantly decline. Secondly, as ship size increases, operating costs become more sensitive to changes in port time. Thirdly, while these findings have been observed in several previous studies, their significance is further highlighted in this study through simulation analysis.
