국문 초록
This study investigates Russian and English phraseology expressing human moral qualities, focusing on synonymy and antonymy to analyze their semantic structures. Russian expressions frequently employ body parts (сердце, душа, руки) and religious or mythological images (ангел, агнец, Янус) to symbolize inner disposition and moral character. In contrast, English phraseology predominantly uses animals, objects, and abstract concepts to convey human traits from experiential and social perspectives.
Synonym sets in both languages distinguish positive and negative qualities, forming layered evaluative networks (e.g., Russian золотое сердце vs. двуликий Янус; English a big heart vs. a wolf in sheep’s clothing). Positive synonyms are more commonly used in contemporary language, whereas some negative expressions remain largely literary or archaic. Antonym sets complement synonyms by emphasizing semantic contrast and evaluative function, expressed in Russian through negation and prefixes (e.g., робкого десятка ↔ не (из) робкого десятка) and in English through opposing adjectives (e.g., a cool head ↔ a hot head). Usage patterns also differ: Russian обросло мхом сердце is archaic, while English all sugar and honey remains frequent and often satirical.
Overall, Russian and English phraseology constructs a dynamic semantic system through synonymy and antonymy, conveying moral evaluation and human character. Differences in figurative representation reflect cultural moral and psychological worldviews, and usage patterns reveal both contemporary vitality and historical or literary constraints.
