이태원 참사 언론보도 의제분석

국문 초록

이 연구는 이태원 참사와 관련한 언론보도 의제를 분석했다. 분석 대상은 국내 5대 일간지이고, 분석기간은 참사 발생 이후 95일간이다. 구조적 토픽 모델링을 적용해, 토픽을 추출하고, 참사 발생 시간과 언론사의 정치적 지향에 따라 의제가 다루어지는 빈도의 차이가 있는지를 통계적으로 검증했다. 분석 결과 11개의 토픽이 추출되었다. 1) 시간의 경과에 따른 의제들의 빈도 변화를 분석한 결과, 참사 발생 이후 시간이 경과할수록 논의 빈도가 증가한 의제는 ‘조사와 수사’, ‘진상규명’, ‘정치적 갈등’ 등으로 나타났고, 시간이 경과할수록 논의 빈도가 감소한 의제는 ‘추모와 애도’, ‘재난관리 실패’, ‘치유와 회복’ 등이었다. 2) 언론사의 정치적 지향에 따른 의제 빈도를 분석한 결과, 보수성향의 언론은 ‘명단공개’과 ‘참사현장‘ 의제의 논의 빈도가 높은 것으로 분석되었고, 진보성향의 언론은 ‘추모와 애도’, ‘정치적 갈등’, ‘재난 관리 실패’ 의제의 논의 빈도가 높은 것으로 나타났다. 3) 언론사의 정치적 지향과 시기에 따른 의제 빈도의 차이를 분석한 결과 진보지와 보수지 모두에서 시간이 경과할수록 ‘조사와 수사’와 ‘진상규명’ 의제화 빈도가 증가하였다. 연구결과에 근거해서, 재난 보도의 한계와 역할에 논의하였다.

영문 초록

This study analyzes media agendas related to the Itaewon disaster. The analysis focused on five major Korean daily newspapers. The study period covered 95 days following the disaster. Structural Topic Modeling was applied to extract key topics. Statistical tests examined differences by time and political orientation. A total of 11 topics were identified through the analysis. Over time, agendas such as “investigation and prosecution”, “fact-finding”, and “political conflict” increased in frequency. Conversely, “mourning and remembrance”, “disaster management failure”, and “healing and recovery” declined in salience. Conservative newspapers emphasized “disclosure of victim list” and “disaster site.” Progressive newspapers emphasized “mourning and remembrance”, “political conflict”, and “disaster management failure”. As for the differences in agenda frequency by political orientation and time, both progressive and conservative newspapers increasingly emphasized the agendas of “investigation and prosecution” and “fact-finding” as time passed. Based on these findings, the study discusses both the limitations and the roles of disaster reporting.
