본 논문은 이타미 주조(伊丹十三, Itami Juzo) 감독의 1985년 작 <탐포포>를 라우라 마크스(Laura U. Marks)의 햅틱 비주얼리티(haptic visuality) 이론을 중심으로 분석하여, 영화가 음식을 매개로 어떻게 1980년대 일본 버블경제 시대의 사회비판적 담론을 구축하는지 탐구하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 연구 방법으로는 마크스의 햅틱 비주얼리티, 제니퍼 바커(Jennifer M. Barker)의 촉각적 시각 이론, 비비안 솝착(Vivian Sobchack)의 영화 현상학을 이론적 틀로 삼는다. 이를 통해 영화의 시각적 기법, 사운드 디자인, 장르적 실험이 관람자의 체화된 감각 경험을 어떻게 유도하며, 이것이사회비판적 메시지와 어떻게 결합되는지 분석한다. 연구 결과, <탐포포>는 단순한 음식 영화를 넘어, 서구의 웨스턴 장르 관습과 일본의 미학을 결합한 독창적인 라면 웨스턴 장르를 창조함을 확인하였다. 영화는 음식의 질감, 소리, 온도를 강조하는 햅틱적 시각성을 통해 관람자의 다감각적 기억을 활성화시키고, 이를 통해 전통과 근대성, 계급의식, 성 역할 등 당대 일본 사회의 문화적 긴장을 체화된 관람 경험으로 전환시킨다. 결론적으로 본 연구는 <탐포포>가 감각적 영화 언어를 통해 추상적인 사회 비판을 구체적이고 즉물적인 감각적 깨달음으로 승화시키는 독창적 사례임을 논증한다. 감각적 스펙터클이 깊이 있는 문화 비판의 도구가 될 수 있음을 증명하며, 사회 참여적 영화의 새로운 가능성을 제시한다는 점에서 의의를 갖는다.

영문 초록

This paper aims to analyze Itami Juzo’s 1985 film Tampopo through Laura U. Marks’ theory of haptic visuality, exploring how the film constructs social-critical discourse about Japan’s bubble economy era of the 1980s through food as a medium. The research methodology employs Marks’ haptic visuality, Jennifer M. Barker’s tactile eye theory, and Vivian Sobchack’s film phenomenology as theoretical frameworks. Through this approach, the study analyzes how the film’s visual techniques, sound design, and genre experimentation induce viewers’ embodied sensory experiences and how these combine with social-critical messages. The research findings confirm that Tampopo transcends simple food cinema, creating an original ‘ramen western’ genre that combines Western genre conventions with Japanese aesthetics. The film activates viewers’ multisensory memories through haptic visuality that emphasizes the texture, sound, and temperature of food, thereby transforming cultural tensions of contemporary Japanese society—such as tradition versus modernity, class consciousness, and gender roles—into embodied viewing experiences. In conclusion, this study demonstrates that Tampopo represents an original case of elevating abstract social criticism into concrete and materialistic sensory enlightenment through sensory cinematic language. This proves that sensory spectacle can serve as a tool for profound cultural criticism and presents new possibilities for socially engaged cinema.
