국문 초록
This essay aims to give an example of reading in English class for undergraduate students for the enhancement of thinking ability and appreciation of the value of different cultures through reading Henry James’s Daisy Miller. That is, this exploration tries to show that reading Daisy Miller closely with proper questioning techniques is an appropriate method to develop thinking ability and recognize cultural meanings and values, which are the goals of English Education. In this sense, this study is in accordance with the assertion that teaching narrative text including British and American Literature to students is good for enhancing the ability of aesthetic sensitivity, which means sympathizing with and understanding other human beings, recognizing the value of other cultures. This paper contains the good reasons of choosing Daisy Miller for a textbook in teaching reading in English, the questions presented to the students for searching answers in group discussions as well as for the lectures, and the assessment of the assignment by students. Lastly, it presents the analyses of the students’ responses to the survey and the evaluation of the reading class by students.
