국문 초록

본 연구는 미국 내 온라인 뉴스 기사에 나타난 다문화 리터러시 관련 담론을 분석하여, 언론이 형성하는 사회 인식의 구조적 특성과 주제적 경향을 실증적으로 탐색하였다. 이를 위해 2022년부터 2025년까지 Google News, CNN, The New York Times 등 주요 뉴스 플랫폼에서 ‘multicultural literacy’, ‘diversity’, ‘inclusion’, ‘immigration’, ‘language rights’ 등의 핵심 키워드를 중심으로 총 8,831건의 기사를 수집하였다. 수집된 텍스트는 불용어 제거와 정규화 등의 전처리 과정을 거친 후, TF 분석과 Word2Vec 기반 의미 연관 분석을 실시하였다. 또한 최종적으로 BERTopic 기반 토픽 모델링을 통해 언어적 표현 이면에 내재된 가치 판단과 정체성 구성 양상을 도출하였다. 분석 결과, 다문화 리터러시 담론은 언어와 교육 경험, 사회 통합, 정치·역사·종교적 권위, 개인적 정체성과 문화적 실천 등 총 다섯 개의 의미 맥락으로 구성되는 것으로 나타났다. 각 토픽은 다문화 사회에서의 언어 습득과 교육 환경, 문화 산업과 사회적 포용성, 정치 이념과 역사적 기억, 젠더 및 사회적 역할 등 다양한 층위를 포괄하며, 이들 담론은 서로 의미적 연관성을 갖는 군집을 형성하였다. 본 연구는 뉴스 담론 분석이라는 방법론적 틀을 통해, 다문화 사회의 갈등 요소와 통합 가능성을 동시에 조망할 수 있는 기초 자료를 제공하였다. 아울러, 디지털 미디어 환경에서 다문화 이슈가 어떻게 재구성되고 수용되는지를 탐색함으로써, 향후 언론 교육, 정책 수립, 문화 커뮤니케이션 전략 수립에 기여할 수 있는 학문적 기반을 마련하였다. 본 연구는 다문화 리터러시를 단일 이슈가 아닌 다층적 담론 구조로 인식하고, 사회 전반의 통합적 사고를 촉진할 수 있는 분석 모델을 제시하였다는 점에서 의의가 있다.

영문 초록

This study investigates the discourse surrounding multicultural literacy as represented in U.S. online news articles, with a focus on identifying the structural characteristics and thematic trends that shape public perception. A total of 8,831 articles published between 2022 and 2025 were collected from major platforms such as Google News, CNN, and The New York Times, using keywords including “multicultural literacy”, “diversity”, “inclusion”, “immigration”, and “language rights”. After undergoing preprocessing steps such as stopword removal and normalization, the texts were analyzed using Term Frequency (TF) and Word2Vec-based semantic association methods. Finally, BERTopic-based topic modeling was applied to extract the underlying evaluative frameworks and identity constructions embedded within the language. The analysis revealed that discourses on multicultural literacy are structured around five semantic domains: language and educational experience, social integration, political/historical/religious authority, personal identity, and cultural practice. Each topic encompasses a range of dimensions such as language acquisition, educational contexts, cultural industries, social inclusion, political ideologies, historical memory, gender, and social roles. These topics were found to form meaningful clusters with strong inter-topic associations. By employing a digital discourse analysis framework, this study offers foundational insights into both the tensions and possibilities of social cohesion in multicultural societies. Furthermore, it highlights how multicultural issues are restructured and received in digital media environments, providing a valuable basis for future directions in media literacy education, public policy, and cultural communication strategies. Ultimately, this study contributes an analytical model that reconceptualizes multicultural literacy as a multilayered discursive construct, capable of promoting integrative thinking across diverse sectors of society.
