헤르만 바빙크의 교회론적 통찰로 고찰한 축소적 교회 위기 극복 방안: ‘축소적 확장’ 개념을 중심으로

국문 초록

본 연구의 목표는 축소 사회의 위기 속에서 교회가 과연 어떤 교회론을 견지함이 마땅한가를 선명히 드러내는 데 목적을 두고 있다. 특별히 19~20세기 네덜란드를 살았던 개혁파 교의학자 헤르만 바빙크(Herman Bavinck, 1854-1921)의 『개혁교의학』(Gereformeerde Dogmatiek) 제4권을 중심으로 축소 사회의 위기 속에서 꼭 필요한 교회론을 조망해 보도록 하겠다. 바빙크의 특징은 시대를 막론하고 그 어떤 핵심 쟁점이 있을 때 문제를 해결하기 위해 꼭 필요한 사안의 ‘본질’을 적실하게 지적하는 장점을 가지고 있으므로 21세기 현대 축소 사회 속에서의 바른 교회론을 정리함에 있어서도 매우 귀중한 통찰을 제공해 줄 수 있음은 분명하다. 축소 사회 속 교회의 위기를 극복하기 위해서는 ‘축소적 확장’(縮小的 擴張, diminutival expansion)을 견지하는 역설적 교회론이 필요하다. 축소 사회 속에서 교회도 비본질을 공제(控除)해 본질로 회귀해야 하며, 교회가 본질로 회귀할 때 비로소 교회의 본질은 그 성격상 역으로 확장되고 팽창된다는 점이 바로 ‘축소적 확장’ 개념의 핵심이다. 본 연구의 전개 순서는 다음과 같다. 먼저 크게 4가지로 축소적 확장의 의미를 바빙크의 교회론 속에서 포괄적으로 조망해 보도록 하겠다. 첫째, 축소의 바른 의미는 ‘본질로의 회귀’로서의 축소이며, 둘째, 축소적 확장의 맥락에서 교회의 ‘사회적 영향력’의 확장이 필요하며, 셋째, 교회를 하나님 나라로 환원하여 축소하려는 움직임은 지양되어야 하고, 넷째, 교회가 축소적 확장을 하려면 선택과 집중이 필요한데 그 선택과 집중은 교회의 4가지 속성, 즉 통일성, 거룩성, 보편성, 사도성의 확보로 가능함을 드러내도록 하겠다. 그 후 다룬 논의를 중심으로 시대적·신학적 간극에 대한 고찰과 더불어 실천적 고찰 및 적용 시간을 가진 후 글을 요약·정리하며 마무리 짓도록 하겠다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to clearly reveal what kind of ecclesiology is appropriate to maintain in the midst of the crisis of a shrinking society. In particular, the study will examine the ecclesiology that is absolutely necessary in a shrinking society, focusing on the fourth volume of Herman Bavinck(1854-1921)’s Gereformeerde Dogmatiek, a Reformed theologian who lived in the Netherlands in the 19th and 20th centuries. Bavinck’s characteristic is that he has the advantage of accurately pointing out the ‘essence’ of issues that are absolutely necessary to resolve any key issue regardless of the era, so it is clear that he can provide invaluable insight in organizing the right ecclesiology in a shrinking society in the 21st century. In order to overcome a shrinking society, a paradoxical ecclesiology that maintains ‘diminutival expansion’ is necessary. In a shrinking society, the church must also return to its essence by deducting the non-essentials, and when the church returns to its essence, the essence of the church expands and expands in reverse due to its nature. This is the core of the concept of ‘diminutival expansion.’The order of development of this study is as follows. First, the study will comprehensively examine the meaning of diminutival expansion in Bavinck’s ecclesiology in four major aspects. First, the correct meaning of diminutival expansion is reduction as ‘return to essence.’ Second, the expansion of the ‘social influence’ of the church is necessary in the context of diminutival expansion. Third, the movement to reduce the church to the kingdom of God and reduce it should be avoided. Fourth, in order for the church to expand reductively, selection and concentration are necessary, and this study will show that such selection and concentration are possible by securing the four attributes of the church: unity, holiness, universality, and apostolicity. After that, the study will conclude the article by summarizing and organizing it after having time for practical consideration and application along with consideration of the temporal and theological gaps centered on the discussions covered thereafter.
