This study aims to acoustically compare the monophthongs of Korean and Uzbek in order to examine their phonetic similarity and predict possible pronunciation errors by Uzbek learners of Korean. To this end, the monophthong systems of both languages were first classified, and the shared use of IPA symbols was analyzed. Speech samples of six Korean monophthongs were recorded from 10 native Korean males and 15 native Uzbek males. F1 and F2 values were measured and analyzed using independent sample t-tests. The results revealed that among six vowel pairs, two pairs (/a/ vs. /ㅏ/, /o’/ vs. /ㅗ/) showed statistically significant differences in both F1 and F2 values, while the other four pairs differed significantly in only one formant value. These findings indicate that despite apparent IPA similarity, the articulatory realization of some monophthongs differs between the two languages. Interpreted within the frameworks of the Speech Learning Model-revised (SLM-r) and the Perceptual Assimilation Model for L2 learners (PAM-L2), the results suggest that Uzbek learners may assimilate unfamiliar Korean vowels into existing L1 categories, which may cause perceptual and production errors. This study provides foundational data for the development of pronunciation instruction and materials tailored to Uzbek-speaking learners of Korean.
