국경 밖 북한 여성의 자기서사와 행위 주체성- 『가려진 세계를 넘어』와 교차적 글쓰기의 가능성

국문 초록

이 글에서는 탈북 여성 박지현과 남한 출신의 채세린이 함께 쓴 『가려진 세계를 넘어』(2021)를 행위 주체성의 관점에서 독해하며, 탈북 여성의 자기서사와 교차적 글쓰기의 윤리에 관해 논의하고자 한다. 2008년 영국에 정착한 박지현은 2015년에 인터뷰를 계기로 만난 채세린에게 자신의 이야기를 책으로 낼 수 있도록 도움을 요청했다. 프랑스어권 아프리카 국가에서 성장하고 파리에서 대학을 다닌 채세린은 박지현과의 대화를 프랑스어로 옮기고 싶다는 의사를 밝혔고, 박지현은 채세린의 제안을 수락했다. 이들의 협업은 2019년 프랑스에서 첫 결실을 맺었다. 박지현과 채세린의 책은 이후 영어, 한국어, 중국어, 체코어 등으로 번역되었다. 이 글에서는 탈북 여성 서사가 미국과 남한 중심의 관점에서 성공 서사나 수난사로 소비되는 방식에 문제를 제기하며, 박지현과 채세린의 교차적 글쓰기에서 확인되는 탈정체화의 윤리를 고찰했다. 영미권에서 탈북 여성과 대필 작가가 함께 탈북 여성의 수기를 완성하는 경우가 많지만, 박지현과 채세린은 공동 저자로서 작업을 진행했다. 또한, 저자들이 말과 글의 위계를 해체하는 실험적인 양식을 적극 도입했다는 점에서 『가려진 세계를 넘어』는 특별한 서사적 위치를 차지한다. 이 글에서는 『가려진 세계를 넘어』의 문학적 성취와 더불어 집필 과정에서 두 저자가 우정과 평화의 가치를 실천하며 입증한 수행성에 적극적인 의미를 부여했다. 박지현과 채세린은 분단 체제로 고착화된 이념적 대립과 적대감을 교차적 글쓰기로 해체하고, 그 과정에서 통일의 의미를 체득했다.

영문 초록

This article examines 『Crossing the Border, Transforming Our World』 (2021), co-authored by North Korean defector Park Ji-hyun and South Korean writer Chae Se-rin, through the lens of agentive subjectivity. In 2008, Park settled in the UK, and in 2015 she met Chae through an interview and asked for her assistance in narrating her life story. Chae, who was raised in a Francophone African country and studied in Paris, proposed to write the book in French, and Park agreed. Their collaboration culminated in a French publication in 2019, which has since been translated into English, Korean, Chinese, and Czech. This study critiques the ways in which narratives of North Korean women are often consumed through U.S.- and South Korea-centered frameworks as either success stories or tales of victimhood. In contrast, Park and Chae’s intersectional authorship challenges such reductive modes of representation by foregrounding practices of de-identification. Unlike the common ghostwriting model frequently seen in the Anglophone world, Park and Chae worked together as equal co-authors and employed an experimental narrative form that subverts the conventional hierarchy between speech and writing. This article explores both the literary achievement of 『Crossing the Border, Transforming Our World』 and the performative significance of the co-writing process, through which the authors enacted the values of friendship and peace. Their intersectional writing practice dismantles the ideological antagonism entrenched by the Korean division system and embodies a lived understanding of reunification.
