Objective: This study aims to examine the direct effects of parental attachment on adolescents’ selfdirected learning ability, as well as its indirect effects mediated by growth mindset and academic self-efficacy. Methods: Data were collected through self-reported questionnaires from a total of 300 high school students. The collected data were analyzed using correlation analysis in SPSS 22.0, and sequential mediation effects were examined using the SPSS PROCESS macro program. Results: The effect of paternal attachment on adolescents' self-directed learning ability was mediated by academic self-efficacy, whereas maternal attachment not only had a direct effect on self-directed learning ability but also an indirect effect through academic self-efficacy. In other words, adolescents with secure parental attachments exhibited higher academic self-efficacy, which, in turn, was associated with greater self-directed learning ability. Conclusions: These findings suggest that enhancing academic self-efficacy is crucial for effectively promoting adolescents’ self-directed learning ability, Therefore, it is necessary to develop various strategies to strengthen academic self-efficacy and to establish systematic programs based on these strategies to ultimately support adolescents in becoming more self-directed learners.
