국문 초록

이 연구는 인구 감소로 사회해체를 경험하고 있는 도서·산간지역 주민을 대상으로 범죄두려움의 결정요인을 확인하는 것이 목적이다. 무질서 이론, 집합효율성 이론 및 경찰정당성 이론을 근거로 세 가지 구조방정식 모형을 설정하고, 상대적 설명력을 비교하였다. 위계적 회귀분석과 구조방정식 모형을 통해 각 변수 간의 경로를 분석하였다. 먼저, 무질서 모형에서 지역무질서가 범죄두려움에 직접 효과를 보였으며, 사회응집력은 유의한 조절효과를 나타냈다. 집합효율성 모형은 모든 경로가 유의하지 않았다. 반면 경찰정당성 모형에서는 경찰효과성이 사회적 무질서를 매개하여 범죄두려움에 유의한 부적 영향을 미쳤으며, 가장 높은 설명력을 나타냈다. 이 연구결과는 도서·산간지역에서 경찰신뢰와 효과성 인식이 범죄두려움을 낮추는 핵심 요인임을 시사한다. 그리고 인구소멸 지역의 경찰정책 수립에 중요한 기초자료를 제공할 수 있다.

영문 초록

This study aims to identify the determinants of fear of crime among residents in island and mountainous areas of South Korea, where communities are experiencing social disorganization due to population decline. Based on disorder theory, collective efficacy theory, and police legitimacy theory, three structural equation models were developed and compared in terms of their relative explanatory power. Using secondary survey data collected from 818 residents, hierarchical regression and structural equation modeling were conducted to examine the causal paths among key variables. The results showed that in the disorder model, community disorder had a significant direct positive effect on fear of crime. In the collective efficacy model, none of the hypothesized paths were statistically significant. In contrast, the police legitimacy model demonstrated the strongest explanatory power, with police effectiveness having a significant indirect negative effect on fear of crime, mediated by social disorder. These findings suggest that trust in police and perceptions of police effectiveness are key factors in mitigating fear of crime in island and mountainous areas. This study provides meaningful implications for future policing strategies and crime prevention policies in declining rural communities.
