This study aims to compare and analyze the 2017 Korean Language Curriculum and the 2022 Korean Language Common Curriculum, and to propose ways to improve the former based on the findings. The comparison focuses on five core components: curricular structure, curriculum design overview, characteristics and goals, content system and achievement standards, and teaching, learning methods, and assessment.Based on the comparative analysis, several improvement measures are suggested. First, the curricular structure should be simplified. Although the Korean Language Curriculum contains content similar to the Common Curriculum, its structure is unnecessarily complex. Second, an explicit overview of curriculum design should be included to clarify the relationship between the Korean language and its curricular framework. Third, the characteristics and goals of the curriculum should incorporate elements of verbal thinking. While communication is a central goal, it is equally important to foster critical understanding and creative expression. Fourth, the content system must be refined by clearly separating it from the achievement standards. This distinction will enhance clarity and coherence. Furthermore, in addition to achievement standards for the four basic language skills—listening, speaking, reading, and writing—standards for the cultural domain should be established. Lastly, the sections on teaching and learning methods and assessment require streamlining. Reducing the current four-stage process (planning, implementation, detailed execution, and application of results) to two or three stages can eliminate redundancy and improve reader comprehension. Overall, this study offers practical suggestions for enhancing the structure and content of the Korean Language Curriculum, thereby contributing to more effective language education.
