국문 초록
This study examines the differences between opera and theater in terms of vocalization and emotional expression, using Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream as a common textual basis. While previous studies have separately analyzed vocal techniques within opera or the acoustic characteristics of emotions in theater, few have conducted a comparative study under identical narrative conditions. Therefore, this research aims to identify the structural and functional distinctions between the two genres by comparing how the same scene and lines are realized in opera and theater. The study employs acoustic analysis and performance aesthetics, focusing on the “confusion of love” scene in Act III, Scene 2. Using criteria such as pitch, rhythm, breathing points, and emotional dynamics, the study examines how opera structurally reconstructs emotions through fixed musical elements, while theater generates emotions spontaneously through variations in intonation, tempo, and pauses. The findings reveal that opera is a structural art form that 'composes' emotions and narratives through meticulously designed musical language, requiring singers to reproduce emotions within the constraints of score-based settings. In contrast, theater allows actors to create and modulate emotions freely, based on psychological interpretation and immediate expression. This study contributes to the field by providing empirical evidence of the fundamentally different emotional transmission mechanisms in opera and theater. Furthermore, it offers a theoretical foundation for developing integrated training models in vocalization and emotional expression, particularly applicable to contemporary performing arts education such as musical theater.
