This study investigates the depiction and description of the Joseon Tongsinsa within popular geographical texts like notable site guidebooks and travel guides from the Edo Period’s geographical records. Furthermore, it delves into the perceptions of Joseon reflected in these sources.
Notable site guidebooks from regions like Edo, Kyoto, Owari, and Omi employ the Joseon Tongsinsa as a symbolic tool to emphasize the distinct historical, cultural, and geographical characteristics of these areas. In some cases, these texts extend beyond the physical experience of the locations to provide further information related to the Joseon Tongsinsa. Within these records, some scenes describe amicable relations achieved by the Joseon Tongsinsa, such as through written exchanges and poetic compositions, while other scenes highlight Japan’s superiority in its diplomatic relations with Joseon or convey the perception of the Joseon Tongsinsa as a tribute mission.
In future research, I intend to further the comparative examination of geographical records by incorporating historical records and literary works, with a specific focus on Kyoto’s Mimizuka (Ear Mound) as depicted in notable site guidebooks.
