This article explores various strategies for reading picture books through storytelling, including how to engage with the text, react to it, and encourage children to create their own stories based on the reading. It uses Janet and Allan Ahlberg’s The Jolly Postman series to illustrate these approaches. The intertextual references in the series are particularly effective in drawing young readers into the story. The article also discusses strategies such as activities before and after reading, which can be helpful for planning lessons.
Teaching English through storytelling can be challenging because it involves balancing two distinct goals: one is the act of teaching, and the other is helping children appreciate the aesthetic value of works of art. However, by focusing on the pleasure of the book and encouraging children to delight in the story, language education can be effectively integrated with various teaching strategies.
