국문 초록

2세기 중후반 기독교 내에는 정통 교회, 영지주의, 몬타누스파가 있었다. 세 종파는 순교의 가치를 두고 논쟁을 벌였다. 일반적으로 정통 교회는 복음에 따른 순교를 지향하였고, 영지주의는 순교의 가치를 부정하였으며, 몬타누스파는 자발적 순교를 권장하였다고 이야기된다. 이 논문은 세 파벌의 순교에 대한 이런 평가가 정당한지 점검하였다. 정통 교회가 자발적 순교를 금지했던 것은 사실이었다. 그러나 영지주의와 몬타누스의 순교관은 왜곡되어 있었다. 먼저 영지주의는 순교를 부정적으로 보지 않았다. 영지주의자는 영지를 획득하는 것을 구원의 방법으로 보았기 때문에 순교를 통해서 바로 구원을 얻을 수 있다는 정통 교회의 주장에 반대하였다. 그렇지만 영지주의자는 순교를 가치 있는 것으로 인정하였고, 영지주의파 내에도 순교자가 있었다. 몬타누스파는 종말이 임박했다고 생각했으며, 현실 세계에 대한 부정적인 시각을 가지고 있었기 때문에 정통 교회보다 순교를 좀 더 영광스러운 것으로 보았다. 그렇지만 그들이 자발적 순교를 적극적으로 권장했던 것은 아니다. 일반적으로 자발적 순교를 뒷받침하는 것으로 여겨지는 테르툴리아누스의 견해는 편파적으로 잘못 해석되었다. 이상의 연구를 종합하건대, 정통 교회, 영지주의, 몬타누스파의 순교관은 지금까지 생각했던 것보다 차이가 크지 않았다.

영문 초록

This paper examined the attitudes of the early Christians on the martyrdom. Accepting the sources which were written by proto-orthodox Christians, most scholars thought there were three kind of attitudes. First, proto-orthodox Church glorified the martyrs, but prohibited the voluntary martyrdom. Christians could decide to be a martyr, only after God gave them revelations to permit the martyrdom. Second, the Gnostic Christians believed that the martyrdom was worthless because Jesus was not suffered from the death of body. Third, Montanists gave the martyrdom too much valve. They encouraged believers to be a voluntary martyr. I studied the sources relating to the martyrdom of proto-orthodox Christians, the gnostic literature which were discovered in Nag Hammadi and the writings of Tertullianus who is believed to a representative of Montanists. As a result I reached the following conclusion. First, as most scholars thought, proto-orthodox Christians prohibited the voluntary martyrdom. But they permitted exceptions to various circumstances. Second, the Gnostic Christians did not assign the same value as the proto-orthodox Christians. But they did not regard the martyrdom as worthless. Some of them regarded the martyrdom as good opportunity to gain gnosis. Third, Montanists assigned more values to the martyrdom than the proto-orthodox Christians. But they did not encouraged believers to be a voluntary martyr. The view that they encouraged believers to be a voluntary martyr did not have any ground.
