Gender Differences in the Influence of Discrimination Experience, Self-Esteem, and Socioeconomic Factors on Self-Rated Health of Parents Caring for Children with Disabilities

국문 초록

본 연구의 목적은 장애 자녀를 둔 부모의 차별경험과 자아존중감이 주관적 건강수준에 미치는 영향을 살펴보고, 부모의 성별에 따른 영향력의 크기를 비교하는 것이다. 본 연구에 서는 장애인삶패널 5차 부모 1,895명(남성 711명, 여성 1,184명)을 분석하였으며, 이를 위하여 카이제곱 및 로지스틱 회귀 분석을 활용하였다. 전체 집단을 분석한 후 결과를 비교하기 위해 성별에 따라 추가로 분석하였다. 그 결과 차별경험과 자아존중감은 주관적 건강수준에 유의미한 영향을 미쳤으며, 성별에 따라 분석했을 때 차별경험과 자아존중감 의 영향력은 여성보다 남성이 더 큰 것으로 나타났다. 고용 상태에 따라서는 남성과 여성 간에 차이가 있었으며, 남성의 경우 고용이 주관적 건강수준에 유의미한 영향을 미쳤으나 여성은 영향이 없었다. 본 연구를 통하여 자아존중감과 고용이 장애 자녀를 둔 부모의 주관적 건강수준에 긍정적인 영향을 미치며, 차별경험은 부정적인 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 따라서 장애인과 부모의 건강한 삶을 위하여 자아존중감 지원 프로그램, 고용 유지를 위한 적극적인 지원, 성별에 따른 지원 등이 필요하다.

영문 초록

This study examined the impact of discriminatory experiences and self-esteem on the self-rated health of parents of children with disabilities, particularly focusing on the influence of gender. Data from 1,895 parents from the fifth wave of the Disability and Life Dynamics Panel, including 711 men and 1,184 women were analyzed using the chi-square and logistic regression. The data were analyzed in total and then subjected to further analysis according to gender to facilitate the comparison of the results. Discrimination and self-esteem had significant effects on self-rated health status. When analyzed by gender, the magnitude of the effects of discrimination and self-esteem was greater for men than for women. A significant difference was observed between male and female participants in terms of employment status, with a notable impact on self-rated health status reported among men, but not among women. This study’s findings indicate that high self-esteem and employment status are positively associated with the self-rated health status of parents of children with disabilities. Thus, implementing support programs to enhance self-esteem, sustain employment, and provide gender-specific assistance could promote healthier lives for children with disabilities and their parents.
