본 논문은 마가복음 11:12-25를 다루면서 세 가지 해석학적 질문에 집중한다. ① 예수가 무화과나무를 저주한 것은 부당한 처사인가? ② 성전에서 예수의 말과 행동들은 무엇을 겨냥하고 있는가? ③ 마가복음 11:22-25는 11:12-21과 무관한 것인가, 유관한 것인가? 이 세 가지 질문은 독립된 것처럼 보이지만 사실은 유기적으로 연결되어 있다. 이 질문에 대한 답을 하는 과정에서 다음과 같은 주요한 원리들이 도출된다. 첫째, 열매의 때가 아님에도 불구하고 열매 없는 것으로 인해 무화과나무를 심판한 것은 부당한 처사처럼 보이지만, 사실 이것은 이 에피소드가 상징적으로 해석되어야 함을 암시하는 증거다. 둘째, 성전에서 예수가 보인 일련의 말과 행동들은 성전이 더 이상 쓸모없으며, 따라서 결국 사라지게 될 것을 상징한다. 셋째, 샌드위치 구조를 고려할 때 무화과나무에 대한 심판은 성전에 대한 심판을 가리킨다. 넷째, 성전 종결 사건 이후 믿음, 기도, 용서에 대한 예수의 발언은 표면적으로 볼 때 성전 종결 사건과 무관해 보이지만 사실은 긴밀하게 연결되어 있다. 다섯째, 마가복음 11:12-25의 해석 전반에 걸쳐 그리스-로마 전기의 네 가지 장르적 특성이 고스란히 드러난다.

영문 초록

This study focuses on three hermeneutical questions in dealing with Mark 11:12-25. ① Can Jesus’ cursing of the fig tree be justified? ② What are Jesus’ words and deeds in the temple aimed at? ③ Is Mark 11:22-25 unrelated or related to 11:12-21? These three questions appear to be independent and irrelevant but are in fact closely related. In answering these questions, several key principles emerge. First, the judgment of the fig tree for its fruitlessness, even though it was not the season of fruit, seems unjust, but it is actually evidence suggesting that the episode should be interpreted symbolically. Second, Jesus’ words and deeds in the temple symbolize that the temple is no longer useful and will be eventually destroyed. Third, given the sandwich structure, the judgment on the fig tree points to judgment on the temple. Fourth, Jesus’ remarks about faith, prayer, and forgiveness after the episode about the closing of the temple may seem unrelated to that episode on the surface, but they are in fact closely connected. Fifth, four genre characteristics of Greco-Roman biography are evident throughout the interpretation of Mark 11:12-25.
