본 연구의 목적은 성인진입기에 해당하는 대학생들이 정체성 탐색의 과정에서 경험하게 되는 실패를 극복하고 실패경험을 긍정적으로 활용하는 데 도움을 주기 위해 실패내성과 관련된 영향요인들을 분석하는 것이다. 그릿과 실패내성 간 성공에 대한 기대의 매개효과가 존재하고, 그릿과 성공에 대한 기대 간 과제 가치의 조절효과가 있을 것이라 가정하였다. 그리고 이러한 관계를 결합한 조절된 매개효과를 순차적으로 검증하였다. 자료 수집은 2023년 12월에서 2024년 1월까지 대학생 517명을 대상으로 이루어졌으며, 온라인 설문조사를 활용하였다. 주요 연구 결과는 다음과 같다.
첫째, 그릿은 실패내성에 직접적인 효과(β=.628)를 지니고 있으며 성공에 대한 기대가 실패내성에 미치는 효과(β=.207)를 매개하여 실패내성에 간접적인 영향(β=.103)을 주었다. 성공에 대한 기대의 매개효과는 95% 신뢰수준에서 유의미한 것으로 나타났다.
둘째, 그릿이 성공에 대한 기대에 미치는 영향력은 과제 가치에 의해 조절되었으며(그릿과 과제 가치의 상호작용효과 β=-.091), 과제 가치가 낮을수록 그릿이 성공에 대한 기대에 미치는 영향력이 증가하는 것으로 나타났다.
셋째, 그릿이 성공에 대한 기대를 거쳐 실패내성에 미치는 영향력이 과제 가치의 수준에 따라 달라질 수 있다는 조절된 매개효과가 검증되었다. 산출된 조절된 매개지수와 조절된 매개효과는 모두 95% 신뢰수준에서 유의미하였다. 즉, 대학생이 지각하는 과제 가치 수준이 낮을수록 그릿이 성공에 대한 기대를 거쳐 실패내성에 미치는 매개효과가 증가하는 것으로 나타났다.
이러한 연구결과를 바탕으로 본 연구가 대학생의 동기 및 실패내성 향상에 주는 시사점을 논의하였다.
영문 초록
The purpose of this study was to analyze the relationships among grit, expectancy for success, and failure tolerance, particularly focusing on the moderated mediation role of the value of task. The researcher explored grit and expectancy for success as variables that influence failure tolerance. Hypotheses were formulated to investigate both the direct effect of grit and its indirect effect mediated by expectancy for success. Additionally, the researcher sought to determine whether the effect of grit on failure tolerance, through expectancy for success, is moderated by subjective value of task. Data were collected from December 2023 to January 2024, targeting 517 college students. The research results were as follows: First, grit had a direct effect (β=.628) and an indirect effect (β=.103) on failure tolerance. The mediating effect of expectancy for success was significant at the 95% confidence level.
Second, the influence of grit on expectancy for success was moderated by the value of task (interaction effect of grit and value of task was β=-.091). This means that the lower the value of task, the stronger the influence of grit on expectancy for success.
Third, the moderated mediation effect was confirmed. The calculated moderated mediation index and effect were both significant at the 95% confidence level. Specifically, as the value of task decreased, the mediation effect of grit on failure tolerance through expectancy for success increased.
Based on these research findings, this study discussed implications for enhancing motivation and failure tolerance in college students.
