영문 초록

Background/Objectives: This study aims to determine the accessibility status of convenience stores from the perspective of manual wheelchair users (MWUs) and develop accessibility maps. Methods: In March 2022, a checklist developed by the researchers was employed to evaluate the entry and indoor space driving accessibility status of 62 convenience stores located in three dongs around the Chungbuk National University in Cheongju, and accessibility maps were developed based on that evaluation results. Results: The major findings are as follows. First, only 9.7% of the cases were found to have entrances where “MWUs can enter by him/herself,” while 14.5% had entrances where “MWUs can enter with insignificant assistance from others.” Second, only 3.2% of the cases had an indoor space where “MWUs can move around as is,” while 40.3% were found to have an indoor space where “MWUs can move around if the current shelf positions were adjusted.” Third, only one case out of the 62 cases was found to have both an entrance where “MWUs can enter by him/herself” and indoor spaces where “MWUs can move around as is.” Accessibility maps were developed considering the evaluation results of entry and indoor space driving accessibility. Conclusion/Implications: The level difference at an entrance exceeding 2 cm must be eliminated by installing a ramp with a slope less than 1/12 so that MWUs can enter without others’ assistance. Moreover, for a smooth indoor driving of MWUs, the spacing of shelves must be planned to be 0.9 m or wider from the preplanning stage or adjusted afterward.
