영문 초록

This study is an attempt to derive a postmodern meaning by analyzing a specific phenomenon and formativeness in contemporary design through the biological and philosophical concept of ‘rhizome’ and applying it to furniture design. The main subjects of research are the furniture designs of Verner Panton, Ron Arad and Zaha Hadid. Their furnitures are generally has a fluid form, can be extended beyond dimensions through continuous connection and connection without beginning and end, is not fixed in one place, and can be disconnected or reconnected anywhere. In other words, it exhibits characteristics such as connectivity, openness, non-hierarchy, individuality, decentralization, diversity, variability, expandability, creativity, contingency, and fluidity, which are the characteristics of rhizomes. These elements are consistent with the core characteristics of postmodern art and culture, and also correspond to the nature of contemporary society and daily life where digital culture is prevalent. The postmodern characteristics of furniture design based on the rhizome concept are summarized as follows. First, it shows fragmentation and decentralization in terms of structure. Second, in the visual aspect, diversity, pluralism, fluidity, and dynamism are emphasized. Third, in terms of use, the user's taste or sensibility is prioritized over the author's subjectivity.
