초대 교회 안에서 여성의 공적 지도력과 금욕주의

국문 초록

본 연구는 4-5세기 초대 교회에서 성직이었던 여집사직을 중심으로 금욕적 이상과 수도원 운동이 교회 내에서 여성의 공적 지도력에 어떤 영향을 미쳤는지를 고찰하려는 시도이다. 4세기 말 교회 안에서 일어난 금욕적 열광주의의 폭발은 교회 안에 수도사-감독 지도력이라는 새로운 지도력을 부상시켰다. 이처럼 금욕적 이상과 수도원 운동이 교회 지도력 에 영향을 미쳤다면, 분명 교회 내 여성의 지도력에도 영향을 미쳤으리라 추론하였다. 필자는 마지간과 오지크가 수집한 원자료를 토대로 여집사의 역할에 대한 연구를 진척시켰다. 교회 규범 (cannons) 으로서 4-5세기 대표적인 규범인 『사도규정』에 나타난 여집사들의 역할과 편지, 성인전 그리고 교회사와 같은 문학적 자료 (literary texts) 에 나타난 여집사들의 역할 사이에 필연적인 간극이 있음을 발견하였다. 그리고 그 간극의 요인이 금욕 적 이상과 수도원 운동에 있음을 갈파하였다. 남성 엘리트 지도력이 견고하게 세워지면서 여성의 위치가 축소되던 때에 수도자-여집사 지도력이 교회 안에 부상했다는 것은 오늘날 세상 에 한참 뒤처진 교회 안에서의 여성 지도력에 강한 도전을 준다.

영문 초록

This study examines how ascetic ideals and monasticism have affected women’s public leadership in the church. It centers its study on the female deacons who were ordained in the 4th and 5th centuries. The explosion of enthusiasm abstinence in the church at the end of the 4th century brought new leadership into the church, monk-bishop leadership. If this ascetic ideal and monasticism had influenced the leadership of the church, it would have surely affected the leadership of women in the church. This research on the role of the female deacon is based on original documentation. As church cannons, we found a necessary gap between the roles of female deacons in the 4th and 5th Apostolic Constitution and the roles of the female deacons in literary materials such as letters, hagiology, and church history (literary text) . This gap can be accounted for by the abstinence ideal and the monastic movement. The rise of the nun-female deacon-leader in the church, when the male elite leadership was firmly established and the position of the woman was reduced, gives a strong challenge to the leadership of women in the church, which is far behind the world today.
