Purpose
Concerns and interesting in fractures mainly from age-related osteoporosis are on the rise as the aged population has been dramatically increased in the modern times. The present study compared and evaluated QCT(quantitative computed tomography)and DXA(dual energy X-ray absorptiometry), useful bone density measuring method, intended for preventions and treatments, to find out what factors are sensitive in osteoporosis diagnosis.
Materials and methods
For the test, one group of 50 patients who received QCT inspection and another group of 50patients for DXA at this hospital from march to april, 2008 (100 patients in total) and 13 patients among the QCT-tested patients who also received DXA test within three months from QCT test day, have been employed. Test subjects are found to be 58.9 aged in average and composed of 9 males and 97 females. As inspection method, T-score was employed to compare results from QCT and DXA inspections on both of L-spine and hip and it named L-spine(T-score) for T-score of L-spine and hip(T-score) for femur neck T -score respectively.
Results
Test results show that 81% of 100 test subjects are aged more than 50 to imply the aged people more frequently take the osteoporosis test and therefore, they are at high risk for osteoporosis due to decreased bone density than other age groups, and average value of L-spine(T-score) at each test was lower at QCT than at DXA, while showing similar value of hip(T-score). Cross analyses for each test result as well as particular results from patients receiving both of DXA and QCT showed that there were not any significant coefficient between test method and hip(T-score), but significant coefficient between test method and L-spine(T-score).
Conclusion
For aged people, frequencies of osteophytes to often make bone density overestimated and of aortic calcification and bone density test by DXA are pretty difficult to exactly perform it, while QCT analyzes if spongy bone decreases by quantity to promote sensitivity of osteoporosis diagnosis and furthermore, it is highly expected to contribute to exact evaluations of curing effects in the future.
