영문 초록

This study re-examines the significance of diaspora, one of the most controversial terms in modern discourse, focusing on Jhumpa Lahiri’s Interpreter of Maladies . Winning the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 2000, the short story collection describes the everyday practice of diaspora in detail. While the banal and mundane practices depicted in her works have often been criticized as a veil to dehistoricize and de-politicize crucial conflicts around the world, I argue that the description of a daily life could be an effective way for the second-or the third-generation immigrant writers to reveal forgotten histories and convey ignored perspectives. Lahiri skillfully embraces historicity carved in the detailed portrayals of diasporic life, and interrogates the neo-liberal and postmodern illusion of diaspora crossing the border-free world, illuminating the irreconcilable and unbridgeable differences among people and peoples.
