The aim of this paper is to stress the importance of formatively appropriate curriculum for translator training programs and to propose “Translation Practicum” based on social constructivist teaching methods advocated by Don Kiraly.
Translator education, one of the applied translation studies, has drawn much attention from the academic circles and has made remarkable progress since the 1990s. This growing attention to translator education has been marked by the explosion of institutions and universities devoted to translator training and the increase in publications and conferences on teaching translation during the corresponding period. What s more, due to the arrival of the Internet and technology advancement, our society living in the era of globalization is swarmed with a stream of information. Accordingly, when the current circumstances are taken into consideration, it is natural that there has been a rising demand for translating an explosive number of source texts written in various foreign languages into target texts that ensure the acceptability of the target culture readership by complying with target language norms.
To educate translators in training as competent translators who can produce such a high-quality translation, this paper presents a new version of “Translation Practicum” based on a socal constructivist approach to translator education aimed to produce a competent translator not only with translation competence marked by linguistic skills and translator competence demonstrated by extralinguistic skills.
