영문 초록

Sight translation, characterized by the simultaneity of conceptualization and enunciation processes, is widely recognized as an ideal tool for training simultaneous interpreters. At the same time, however, the simultaneity, coupled with the difference in the word order of English and Korean, causes considerable linguistic and time constraints to the performer of sight translation. As a strategy to overcome such constraints, professional interpreters and translators commonly resort to the method called ‘progressive enunciation.’ meaning that, if possible, both their eye movement and verbalization occur in a ‘linear way, following the order of meaning units found in the source text. This specific method of sight translation frequently results in the segmentation and integration of source text sentences and necessitates the use of adnominal clause embedded in another sentence and topic-comment structure as a tool for constructing Korean target sentences. This paper looks into these features as the methodological characteristics of sight translation.
