One may imagine that the Korean garden is similar to the Japanese or Chinese garden or that there is a generalized eastern type garden. The Korean garden, however, has a combination of features unique to Korea. The culture of the three nations including their garden cultures is imbedded more or less in three major ideas: Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism. A country's garden culture depends on natural elements and the people's spiritual values and beliefs. Related to this, Korea has maintained its own distinction throughout its long garden-making history dating back to the Three Kingdoms period (57 B.C.-A.D. 668). This is especially evident in their numerous royal palace gardens. These gardens often had ponds and small islands alluding to Taoist sanctuaries. Taoism has been a part of the Korean culture so long and has been so influential that it is almost impossible to say that it was not inherently Korean. Korean culture could be defined as a nature worshiping culture in search for the way of nature, the unity of humans and nature, which essentially corresponds with Taoist beliefs. Korea's samjae philosophy, the triad made of heaven, earth and humans, has been espoused from the time of the nation's foundation (2333 B.C.). To understand the aesthetic of the Korean garden one needs to understand the significance of the Taoist philosophy, a philosophy that follows the principle of nature, and understand its influence on the concept of garden designing and location selection. Understanding the Korean garden that contains a unique spirituality and scenery among all Asian gardens, one will gain a perspective view of the three Eastern Garden styles as well.
