Objective: This study examined the effects of olfactory sense stimulation using lemons on the recovery of deglutition functions of chronic stroke dysphagia patients.
Method: This study subjects were 24 stroke patients with dysphagia identified through videofluoroscopy. The patients were randomly assigned to an experimental group that underwent dysphagia treatment with olfactory sense stimulation using lemons and a control group that underwent dysphagia treatment intervention with olfactory sense stimulation using tap water. Therapeutic interventions were conducted for 6 weeks and deglutition functions were compared by measuring before and after the interventions.
Results: The measurements of the experimental group showed significantly larger differences before and after the treatment compared to the control group. Both groups showed decreases in FDS and CDS scores and increases in GUSS scores after the treatment, indicating improvement in deglutition functions.
Conclusion: Olfactory sense stimulation using lemons positively affected the deglutition functions of stroke related dysphagia patients. Based on these results, olfactory sense stimulation using lemons could be developed into a functional therapeutic intervention method for improving deglutition functions in dysphagia patients. Further studies will be necessary to confirm the clinical value of this method.
