The purpose of this study was to investigate the application status of environment-friendly features in apartment communities that were certified by Green Building Certification System (GBCS) since 2008. A series of field investigation was conducted at 10 apartment communities between July 22 and August 25, 2010. The field investigation included visual inspection and photographing after preliminary investigation. Major findings of this study are as follows: The following 13 features were found in all of the apartment communities: community facilities; bicycle storages and roads; energy consumption reducing features; waste recycling facilities; reducing food waste; usage of certified environment-friendly materials; features to reduce the rainwater load; features to reduce residential water consumption; the provision of document and guidance of community management and maintenance; the distribution of user manuals; ecological landscape; aquatic biotope; and terrestrial biotope. And, the following four features were found in eight to nine apartment communities: pedestrian walkways; using alternative energy; rainwater utilizing facilities; and natural and mechanical ventilation systems. On the other hand, the features influenced by the site conditions of an apartment community, preserving the original natural environment, a network of pedestrian walkways outside the community and expensive gray water systems, were found in only a handful of apartment communities. The results of the field investigation showed that, except for the three features witnessed in a few apartment communities, most of the environment-friendly features in the list of investigation items were found in all of the target communities, showing overall high application rates.
